غَزْوَةِ مَسْلَمَةَ وَعَوْدِهِ وَفِيهَا فَرَّقَ مَسْلَمَةُ الْجُيُوشَ بِبِلَادِ خَاقَانَ، فَفُتِحَتْ مَدَائِنُ وَحُصُونٌ عَلَى يَدَيْهِ، وَقَتَلَ مِنْهُمْ وَأَسَرَ وَسَبَى وَأَحْرَقَ، وَدَانَ لَهُ مَنْ وَرَاءَ جِبَالِ بَلَنْجَرَ، وَقُتِلَ ابْنُ خَاقَانَ، فَاجْتَمَعَتْ تِلْكَ الْأُمَمُ جَمِيعُهَا، الْخَزَرُ وَغَيْرُهُمْ عَلَيْهِ فِي جَمْعٍ لَا يَعْلَمُ عَدَدَهُمْ إِلَّا اللَّهُ تَعَالَى، وَقَدْ جَازَ مَسْلَمَةُ بَلَنْجَرَ فَلَمَّا بَلَغَهُ خَبَرُهُمْ أَمَرَ أَصْحَابَهُ، فَأَوْقَدُوا النِّيرَانَ ثُمَّ تَرَكَ خِيَامَهُمْ وَأَثْقَالَهُمْ وَعَادَ هُوَ وَعَسْكَرُهُ جَرِيدَةَ، وَقَدَّمَ الضُّعَفَاءَ وَأَخَّرَ الشُّجْعَانَ، وَطَوَوُا الْمَرَاحِلَ كُلَّ مَرْحَلَتَيْنِ فِي مَرْحَلَةٍ حَتَّى وَصَلَ إِلَى الْبَابِ وَالْأَبْوَابِ فِي آخِرِ رَمَقٍ.
Translation
✧ Maslamah's Campaign and Return In this year Maslamah dispersed the armies in the lands of Khāqān. Cities and fortresses were conquered at his hands, and he killed, captured, enslaved, and burned among them. Those beyond the mountains of Balanjar submitted to him, and the son of Khāqān was killed. Then all those nations gathered together, the Khazar and others, against him in a multitude whose number none knows except God Almighty. Maslamah had already crossed Balanjar, and when their news reached him, he commanded his companions to kindle fires, then he left their tents and baggage and returned with his army as a mounted column. He placed the weak in front and the brave in the rear, and they traversed the stages, every two stages in one, until he reached al-Bāb and al-Abwāb in the last gasp of strength.
