Translation

✧ Among the notables who died in the year 112: Rajāʾ b. Ḥaywah RAJĀʾ B. ḤAYWAH AL-KINDĪ Abū al-Miqdām, and it is said: Abū Naṣr. He was a noble Successor, of great standing, trustworthy, virtuous, just, a truthful minister to the caliphs of the Banū Umayyah. Makḥūl, when asked, would say: "Ask our shaykh and our master Rajāʾ b. Ḥaywah." More than one of the imams praised him and deemed him trustworthy in narration. He has narrations and fine speech, may God have mercy on him. SHAHR B. ḤAWSHAB AL-ASHʿARĪ AL-ḤIMṢĪ Shahr b. Ḥawshab al-Ashʿarī al-Ḥimṣī, and it is said that he was a Damascene. A noble Successor. He narrated from his mistress Asmāʾ bt. Yazīd b. al-Sakan and others, and a group of trustworthy Successors and others narrated from him. He was a scholar, a devout worshipper, an ascetic, but a group spoke against him because he took a bag (kharīṭah) from the public treasury without the permission of the ruler. They faulted him, impugned his honor, abandoned his ḥadīth, and composed poetry about him, among them Shuʿbah and others. It is said that he stole something other than that, and God knows best. Other groups deemed him trustworthy, accepted his narration, praised him, his worship, his religion, and his striving. They said: "What he took from the public treasury, if it is confirmed from him, does not discredit his narration, for he was an administrator over it and had disposal over it." And God knows best. Al-Wāqidī said: Shahr died in this year, meaning the year 112. It is said: a year before that, and it is said: in the year 100. And God knows best. ṬALḤAH B. MUṢARRIF B. ʿAMR B. KAʿB Ṭalḥah b. Muṣarrif b. ʿAmr b. Kaʿb, Abū ʿAbd Allāh: He heard from Anas b. Mālik, Ibn Abī Awfā, and Ibn al-Zubayr. He was the Qurʾān reciter of the people of Kufa; they would recite the Qurʾān to him. When he saw their large number with him, he disliked that for himself, so he went to al-Aʿmash and recited to him. Then the people turned to al-Aʿmash and left Ṭalḥah. He was trustworthy, righteous, a devout worshipper. From Ibn Abī Ghaniyyah, who said: A shaykh narrated to me from his grandmother, who said: Ṭalḥah b. Muṣarrif sent to me: "I want to drive a peg into your wall." So I sent to him: "Yes." She said: Our servant girl entered the house of Ṭalḥah to borrow fire while Ṭalḥah was praying, and his wife said to her: "Stay where you are, O so-and-so, until we roast this dried meat for Abū Muḥammad on your stick, so he may break his fast with it." When he finished the prayer, he said: "What have you done? I will not taste it until you send back to her mistress, because you detained her and roasted on her stick." Abū Nuʿaym said with his chain from ʿAbd al-Ṣamad b. Yazīd, who said: I heard al-Fuḍayl b. ʿIyāḍ say: It reached me from Ṭalḥah that he laughed one day and then leapt upon himself, saying: "Why the laughter? Only he laughs who has crossed the terrors and passed over the Ṣirāṭ." Then he said: "I swore that I would not smile laughing until I know how the Event will befall." So he was not seen laughing until he went to God, Mighty and Majestic. Muḥammad b. [Abī] al-Qāsim informed us with a chain of his, saying: ʿAbd al-Malik b. Hāniʾ said: Zayd proposed to Ṭalḥah for his daughter, and he said: "She is ugly." He said: "I have accepted her." He said: "There is a mark on her heel." He said: "I have accepted." Abū Nuʿaym said with his chain from Muḥammad b. Fuḍayl, from his father, who said: We entered upon Ṭalḥah b. Muṣarrif to visit him in illness, and Abū Kaʿb said to him: "May God heal you." He said: "I seek refuge in God." Abū Saʿīd said: And from Layth, who said: I told Ṭalḥah during the illness in which he died that Ṭāwūs used to dislike groaning. He said: So Ṭalḥah was not heard groaning until he died. AL-MUGHĪRAH B. ḤAKĪM AL-ṢANʿĀNĪ Al-Mughīrah b. Ḥakīm al-Ṣanʿānī: From al-Anbār. He narrated from Ibn ʿUmar and Abū Hurayrah. From ʿAbd Allāh b. Ibrāhīm, who said: My father informed me, saying: Al-Mughīrah b. Ḥakīm traveled to Makkah more than fifty journeys, barefoot, in iḥrām, fasting, not abandoning the dawn prayer during his travels. When predawn came, he would descend and pray while his companions went on; when he prayed the morning prayer, he would catch up to them whenever he caught up. ʿAbd Allāh b. Ibrāhīm said: And Hishām b. Yūsuf informed me, saying: I heard Ibrāhīm b. ʿUmar say: Al-Mughīrah b. Ḥakīm's portion in his day and night was the entire Qurʾān. He would recite in the morning prayer from al-Baqarah to Hūd, and recite before noon until he prayed ʿaṣr from Hūd to al-Ḥajj, then complete it. And ʿAbd al-Jabbār b. Wāʾil b. Ḥujr al-Ḥaḍramī. His father died while his mother was pregnant with him, so everything they narrate from his father is interrupted.
