Translation

✧ Mention of those among the notable who died in the year one hundred and eleven Al-Ḥajjāj the Devout — Al-Ḥajjāj the Devout: From Muḥammad b. Ṣāliḥ al-Tamīmī, who said: Abū ʿAbd Allāh, the muezzin of the mosque of Banū Jarād, said: A young man became my neighbor. Whenever I called the adhān for prayer, he would appear as if he were a peck on the back of my neck. When I prayed, he prayed, then put on his sandals and entered his dwelling. I used to wish that he would speak to me or ask me for something. One day he said to me: “O Abū ʿAbd Allāh, do you have a muṣḥaf you could lend me to read from?” I brought out a muṣḥaf and handed it up to him. He clasped it to his chest and said: “Today you and I shall surely have an affair.” I missed him that day and did not see him come out. I called the iqāmah for maghrib, but he did not come out. I called the iqāmah for the last ʿishāʾ, but he did not come out. My suspicions turned bad. When I had prayed the last ʿishāʾ, I went to the house where he was. In it there was a bucket and a water vessel, and over his door there was a curtain. I pushed the door, and there he was, dead, with the muṣḥaf in his lap. I took the muṣḥaf from his lap and sought help from some people to carry him until we placed him on his bier. I spent the night thinking about whom I should speak to so that he might be shrouded. I called the adhān for dawn at its time and entered the mosque to pray. There was a light in the qiblah. I approached it, and there was a shroud folded in the qiblah. I took it, praised God (mighty and majestic be He), brought it into the house, and went out. I called the iqāmah for prayer. When I had said the salām, there on my right were Thābit al-Bunānī, Mālik b. Dīnār, Ḥabīb al-Fārisī, and Ṣāliḥ al-Murrī. I said: “O my brothers, what has brought you here so early?” They said to me: “Someone died in your neighborhood last night.” I said: “A young man who used to pray with me at the prayers has died.” They said to me: “Show him to us.” When they entered upon him, Mālik b. Dīnār uncovered his face and kissed the place of his prostration, then said: “May my father and mother be your ransom, O Ḥajjāj! When you were recognized in a place, you moved from it to another place.” Then they set about washing him, and each of them had a shroud with him. One of them said: “I will shroud him.” When that went on long among them, I said to them: “I thought about his matter last night and said: Whom shall I speak to so that he may be shrouded? I came to the mosque and called the adhān, then entered to pray, and there was a folded shroud. I do not know who placed it there.” They said: “He is to be shrouded in that shroud.” So we shrouded him and brought him out, and we could scarcely lift his bier because of the great number of people who attended from the crowd.
