Translation

✧ The dismissal of Khālid and his brother Asad from Khurasan and the appointment of Ashras In the year 109 Hishām b. ʿAbd al-Malik dismissed Asad b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Qasrī from the governorship of Khurasan. The reason for that was that Asad, the brother of Khālid, showed prejudice against Naṣr b. Sayyār and a group with him, among them ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Nuʿaym, Sawrah b. al-Ḥurr, al-Bakhtarī b. Abī Dirham, and ʿĀmir b. Mālik al-Ḥimmānī. He claimed that he had heard from them what was not proper, so he beat them with whips and shaved their heads, and sent them to Khālid, writing to him that they had intended to rise against him. When they came to Khālid, he blamed Asad and reproached him, saying: "Why did he not send me their heads?" Naṣr said: You sent reproach for no fault, in a letter in which Umm Tamīm blames me. Even if I am bound, a captive in their hands, Amid worries, distress, and piercing grief, A pledge of Qasr, I have found no affliction Like the captivity of noble men at the hands of the base. Tell those who claim to be Qasr—and Qasr Are people of the staff of the spear, full of flaws— Have you been weaned from treachery and treachery, Or are you like one who hoards and persists? And al-Farazdaq said: O Khālid, were it not for God, you would not have been given obedience, And were it not for the Banū Marwān, they would not have bound Naṣr. Then you would have met, at the tightening of his bonds, The Banū al-Ḥarb, no weakness in the meeting and no weariness. One day Asad delivered a sermon and said: "May God disfigure these faces, the faces of the people of discord, hypocrisy, and corruption. O God, separate me from them and bring me out to my place of emigration and my homeland." He also said: "Whoever seeks what I have, while the Commander of the Faithful is my maternal uncle and the maternal uncle of my brother, and with me are twelve thousand Yemeni swords." Hishām wrote to Khālid: "Dismiss your brother." So he was dismissed, and he ordered him to come to the Hajj, and he departed from it in Ramadan. He appointed al-Ḥakam b. ʿAwānah al-Kalbī as his successor over Khurasan, and Hishām appointed Ashras b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Sulamī as governor of Khurasan, and ordered him to correspond with Khālid b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Qasrī. Ashras was virtuous and good, and for that reason he was called al-Kāmil (the perfect). He was the first to establish frontier garrisons in Khurasan, and he appointed ʿAbd al-Malik b. Dithār al-Bāhilī over them, while he himself managed all affairs, great and small, and the people rejoiced in him.
