Translation

✧ Those of the notable figures who died in the year 106 Sālim b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb, Abū ʿUmar: He narrated from his father, Abū Ayyūb, and Abū Hurayrah. He was a jurist, a devoted worshipper, generous, and righteous, and he was the most similar of his father’s children to him. His father loved him intensely, and when he was reproached for that, he recited: They blame me concerning Sālim, and I blame them; Sālim is the skin between the eye and the nose. On the authority of Hawdah b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz, who said: A man jostled Sālim b. ʿAbd Allāh, so Sālim said to him, “Some of this, may God have mercy on you.” The man said to him, “I think you are nothing but an evil man.” Sālim said to him, “I do not think you have gone far.” And on the authority of Ibn Wahb, who said: Ḥanẓalah narrated to me, saying: I saw Sālim b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUmar going out to the market and buying his own needs. Ismāʿīl b. Aḥmad informed us with a chain of transmission of his going back to Ashhab b. Mālik, who said: No one in the time of Sālim b. ʿAbd Allāh resembled the righteous of the past in asceticism and moderation in living more than he did; he used to dress for two dirhams. Sulaymān b. ʿAbd al-Malik, seeing his good disposition, said to him, “What do you eat?” He said, “Bread and oil, and when I find meat, I eat it.” He asked, “Do you desire it?” He said: “If I do not desire it, I leave it until I desire it.” On the authority of ʿUmayr b. Mirdās, who said: al-Ḥumaydī narrated to us, saying: I heard Sufyān b. ʿUyaynah say: Hishām b. ʿAbd al-Malik entered the Kaʿbah and found Sālim b. ʿAbd Allāh there. He said to him, “O Sālim, ask me for a need.” Sālim said, “I am too shy before God to ask anyone other than Him in the house of God.” When he left, Hishām followed him and said, “Now you have come out, so ask me for a need.” Sālim said, “From the needs of this world or the needs of the Hereafter?” He said, “From the needs of this world.” Sālim said, “I have not asked the One who owns it, so how can I ask one who does not own it?” Sālim died in Madinah at the end of Dhū al-Ḥijjah of this year. Hishām b. ʿAbd al-Malik prayed over him upon his arrival in Madinah, and he was buried in al-Baqīʿ. Ṭāwūs b. Kaysān al-Yamānī, whose kunyah is Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, a client of Hamadhān: He performed the pilgrimage forty times and sat with seventy of the Companions of the Messenger of God ﷺ. On the authority of ʿAbd al-Munʿim b. Idrīs, from his father, who said: Wahb b. Munabbih and Ṭāwūs al-Yamānī prayed the morning prayer with the ablution of the night prayer for forty years. And on the authority of ʿAbd al-Razzāq b. Dāwūd b. Ibrāhīm: A lion blocked the people one night on the road to the pilgrimage, and the people crowded together. When dawn came, it left them, and the people dispersed right and left and threw themselves down and slept. Ṭāwūs stood up to pray, and his son said to him, “Will you not sleep? You were exhausted last night.” Ṭāwūs said, “Who sleeps at dawn?” And on the authority of ʿAbd al-Razzāq, who said: Ṭāwūs arrived in Makkah, and an emir arrived there. It was said to him, “He has such virtue, and such, and such; if only you would go to him.” He said, “I have no need of him.” They said, “We fear him for you.” He said, “He is not as you say.” The worshipper from Yemen: On the authority of ʿAlī b. Zayd, who said: Ṭāwūs said: While I was in Makkah, al-Ḥajjāj sent for me and seated me beside him and leaned me against a cushion. Then he heard a man reciting the talbiyah around the House, raising his voice in the talbiyah. He said, “Bring me the man.” He was brought, and al-Ḥajjāj said, “From whom is the man?” He said, “From the Muslims.” He said, “I did not ask you about Islam.” He said, “What did you ask?” He said: “I asked you about your town.” He said, “From the people of Yemen.” He said, “How did you leave Muḥammad b. Yūsuf?”—meaning his brother—He said, “I left him great, handsome, well-dressed, a rider, a goer-out, a goer-in.” He said, “I did not ask you about that.” He said, “What did you ask?” He said, “I asked you about his conduct.” He said, “I left him an oppressor, a tyrant, obedient to the creature, disobedient to the Creator.” Al-Ḥajjāj said to him, “What made you say such words when you know his standing with me?” The man said, “Do you think his standing with you is dearer to him than my standing with God, mighty and glorious, while I am a visitor to His House, a believer in His Prophet, and a fulfiller of His debt?” He said: Al-Ḥajjāj fell silent and did not answer. The man rose without permission and departed. Ṭāwūs said: I rose after him and said, “The man is wise.” He came to the House and clung to its curtains, then said: “O God, in You I take refuge and to You I flee. O God, grant me in my yearning for Your generosity and contentment with Your guarantee an alternative to the withholding of misers and sufficiency from what is in the hands of monopolizers. O God, Your near relief, Your ancient kindness, and Your good custom.” Then the people departed, and I saw him on the evening of ʿArafah saying: “O God, if You have not accepted my pilgrimage, my toil, and my exhaustion, do not deprive me of the reward for my affliction at Your withholding acceptance.” Then he went among the people, and I saw him on the morning of Jamʿ saying: “What shame from You, by God, even if You pardon,” repeating that.
