✧ The Hajj of Hishām b. ʿAbd al-Malik In the year 106 (AH), Hishām b. ʿAbd al-Malik led the people in the Hajj. Before entering al-Madīnah, he wrote to Abū al-Zinād: “Write down for me the rites of the Hajj.” So he wrote them down for him and met him. When Hishām prayed in the Ḥijr, Ibrāhīm b. Muḥammad b. Ṭalḥah spoke to him and said: “I ask you by Allah and by the sanctity of this House and this land from which you set out venerating its right, to return to me my property.” He said: “And what property?” He said: “My house.” He said: “Where were you concerning ʿAbd al-Malik?” He said: “By Allah, he wronged me.” He said: “What about al-Walīd?” He said: “By Allah, he wronged me.” He said: “What about Sulaymān?” He said: “By Allah, he wronged me.” He said: “What about ʿUmar?” He said: “May Allah have mercy on him; by Allah, he returned it to me.” He said: “What about Yazīd?” He said: “By Allah, he wronged me. He seized it after I had taken possession of it, and it is in your hands.” He said: “By Allah, if there were any striking in you, I would have struck you.” He said: “By Allah, in me there is striking by the sword and the whip.” Hishām said: “This is Quraysh and their tongues, and there remain among people remnants the like of which I have never seen.” Abū al-Zinād said: I met Hishām, and while I was in the procession, Saʿīd b. ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Walīd b. ʿUthmān b. ʿAffān met him and rode beside him. I heard him say: “O Commander of the Faithful, Allah has continually bestowed favors upon the family of the Commander of the Faithful and supported his oppressed caliph. They have continued to curse Abū Turāb in these places, for they are blessed places, and it behooves the Commander of the Faithful to curse him there.” His words distressed Hishām, and he said: “We have not come to revile anyone or curse him. We have come as pilgrims.” Then he cut off his speech and turned to me, asking me about the Hajj. I informed him of what I had written for him. He said: It distressed Saʿīd that I heard him speak of that, and he was broken-hearted whenever he saw me. When Hishām entered al-Madīnah, he prayed over Sālim b. ʿAbd Allāh. He saw the large number of people and levied a force of four thousand upon them, so it was called the Year of the Four Thousand. The governor over Makkah, al-Madīnah, and al-Ṭāʾif was Ibrāhīm b. Hishām; over al-ʿIrāq and Khurāsān was Khālid al-Qasrī. He appointed over the prayer of al-Baṣrah ʿUqbah b. ʿAbd al-Aʿlā, over the police Mālik b. al-Mundhir b. al-Jārūd, over its judiciary Thumāmah b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Anas, and over Khurāsān his brother Asad b. ʿAbd Allāh.
