Translation

✧ Appointing al-Ḥurr over al-Mawṣil In the year one hundred and six, Hishām appointed al-Ḥurr b. Yūsuf b. Yaḥyā b. al-Ḥakam b. Abī al-ʿĀṣ b. Umayyah over al-Mawṣil. He is the one who built al-Manqūshah as a residence for himself. It was named al-Manqūshah because it was decorated with teak, marble, colored inlays, and the like. It was near the market of the perfume sellers, the hair clothiers, and the Wednesday market. But now it is a ruin adjacent to the Wednesday market. This al-Ḥurr is the one who made the canal that was in al-Mawṣil. The reason for that was that he saw a woman carrying a water jar, carrying it a little, then resting a little, because of the distance of the water. So he wrote to Hishām about that, and he ordered the digging of a canal to the town. He dug it, and most of the drinking water of the townspeople came from it. Upon it was the main street known as Canal Street. The work on it continued for several years. Al-Ḥurr died in the year one hundred and thirteen.
