✧ The Appointment of Asad over Khurasan It is said: And in the year one hundred and six, Khālid b. ʿAbd Allāh appointed his brother Asad over Khurasan. He arrived there while Muslim b. Saʿīd was raiding in Farghānah. When Asad came to the river to cross it, al-Ashhab b. ʿUbayd al-Tamīmī prevented him. He was in charge of the boats at Āmul and said: “I have been forbidden from that.” He gave him gifts and treated him gently, but he refused. He said: “I am an amīr,” so he permitted him. Asad said: “Take note of this man so that we may thank him for his trustworthiness.” He came to al-Ṣughd and encamped at al-Marj. Over Samarqand was Hāniʾ b. Hāniʾ, and he went out among the people to meet Asad. He saw him on a rock, so the people took it as an ill omen and said: “There is no good in this one: a lion on a rock.” He entered Samarqand and sent two men carrying the covenant of ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Nuʿaym over the army. They arrived, asked about him, and delivered the covenant to him. He came with it to Muslim and said: “Hearing and obedience.” ʿAbd al-Raḥmān then returned with the people, and Muslim was with him. They came to Asad in Samarqand, and he dismissed Hāniʾ from it and appointed over it al-Ḥasan b. Abī al-ʿAmarraṭah al-Kindī. It was said to al-Ḥasan: “The Turks have come against you in seven thousand.” He said: “They did not come against us; we came against them and conquered their lands and enslaved them. Despite this, I will bring some of you close to others and tie the forelocks of your horses to their horses.” Then he reviled them and invoked evil upon them. Then he went out to them slowly, and they raided and returned safely. He appointed Thābit Quṭnah as his successor over Samarqand. He gave a sermon to the people, but he stammered and said: “Whoever obeys God and His Messenger has gone astray.” Then he fell silent and did not utter a word, and he said: If I am not an orator among you, then with my sword, when battle rages, I am an orator. It was said to him: “Had you said this from the pulpit, you would have been the most eloquent of people.” Then Ḥājib al-Fīl al-Yashkurī said, mocking his stammering: Abū al-ʿAlāʾ, you have met a difficult matter on Friday, of distress and choking. You twist the tongue when you attempt speech with it, as a slippery stone falls from the summit of a mountain peak. When the eyes of the people cast you, awake, you began to choke when you stood, with saliva. As for the Qurʾān, you are not guided to a clear verse of the Qurʾān, nor are you guided to success.
