Translation

✧ The dismissal of ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. al-Ḍaḥḥāk from Madinah and Makkah That was in the middle of Rabīʿ al-Awwal, and he had been his governor over Madinah for three years. And in the year one hundred and four Yazīd b. ʿAbd al-Malik dismissed ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. al-Ḍaḥḥāk from Madinah and Makkah, and he had been his governor over them for three years, and he appointed ʿAbd al-Wāḥid al-Naḍrī. The reason for that was that ʿAbd al-Raḥmān sought the hand of Fāṭimah bt. al-Ḥusayn b. ʿAlī, and she said: "I do not desire marriage, and I have devoted myself to these sons of mine." But he pressed her and said: "If you do not do so, I will have your eldest son flogged on a charge of wine," meaning ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Ḥasan b. al-Ḥusayn b. ʿAlī. Ibn Hurmuz, a man from the people of Syria, was in charge of the dīwān in Madinah, and he had submitted his account and wanted to travel to Yazīd. He entered upon Fāṭimah to bid her farewell [and said: "Is there any need?"]. She said: "Inform the Commander of the Faithful of what I suffer from Ibn al-Ḍaḥḥāk and how he importunes me," and she sent a messenger with a letter to Yazīd informing him of that. Ibn Hurmuz came to Yazīd, and he asked him for news of Madinah and said: "Is there any strange report?" He did not mention the matter of Fāṭimah. Then the chamberlain said to Yazīd: "At the door is a messenger from Fāṭimah bt. al-Ḥusayn." Ibn Hurmuz said: "She entrusted me with a message," and he told him the news. He descended from his bed and said: "May you have no mother! You had this and did not tell me?" He excused himself with forgetfulness. He gave permission to her messenger and brought him in, took the letter, read it, and began striking with a cane in his hand and saying: "Ibn al-Ḍaḥḥāk has become bold. Is there a man who will let me hear his voice in torment?" He was told: "ʿAbd al-Wāḥid b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Naḍrī." So he wrote in his own hand to ʿAbd al-Wāḥid: "I have appointed you over Madinah, so go down to it, dismiss Ibn al-Ḍaḥḥāk from it, fine him forty thousand dinars, and torment him until I hear his voice while I am on my bed." The courier set out with the letter, and he did not enter upon Ibn al-Ḍaḥḥāk. Ibn al-Ḍaḥḥāk was informed, so he summoned the courier and gave him a thousand dinars to tell him his news, and he told him. Ibn al-Ḍaḥḥāk then set out hastily and alighted with Maslamah b. ʿAbd al-Malik and sought his protection. Maslamah came to Yazīd and asked him for the need of his maternal uncle. He said: "Every need is yours except Ibn al-Ḍaḥḥāk." He said: "By God, it is Ibn al-Ḍaḥḥāk." He said: "By God, I shall never pardon him." And he sent him back to Madinah to ʿAbd al-Wāḥid, who tormented him and he met with evil; then he wore a woolen cloak and begged from the people. The arrival of al-Naḍrī was in Shawwāl of the year one hundred and four. Ibn al-Ḍaḥḥāk had harmed all the Anṣār, so the poets satirized him and the righteous censured him. Al-Zuhrī had advised him with sound counsel, namely that he should ask the scholars whenever a matter became unclear to him, but he did not accept and did not do so, so the people detested him and the poets censured him; then this was the end of his affair. When al-Naḍrī governed them, he behaved well and they loved him. He was good, and he consulted al-Qāsim b. Muḥammad and Sālim b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUmar in what he wanted to do.
