Thābit ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Ḥassān b. Thābit: . ʿAṭāʾ b. Yasār ʿAṭāʾ b. Yasār, brother of Sulaymān b. Yasār: He related from Ubayy b. Kaʿb, Ibn Masʿūd, Abū Ayyūb, and a great many of the Companions. He used to fast one day and break his fast the next. From ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Zayd b. Aslam, he said: ʿAṭāʾ b. Yasār and Sulaymān b. Yasār set out from al-Madīnah as pilgrims with companions of theirs, until when they were at al-Abwāʾ they alighted at a stopping place. Sulaymān and his companions went off for some need of theirs, and ʿAṭāʾ remained standing in the stopping place praying. He said: A beautiful Bedouin woman entered upon him. When ʿAṭāʾ saw her, he thought she had a need, so he shortened his prayer, then said: Do you have a need? She said: Yes. He said: What is it? She said: Get up and take your fill of me, for I am consumed with desire and I have no husband. He said: Away from me! Do not burn me and yourself with fire. And he looked at a beautiful woman who began to entice him away from himself, while he refused except what he wanted. He said: ʿAṭāʾ began to weep and say: Woe to you! Away from me! He said: His weeping intensified. When the woman saw him and what had entered him of weeping and anguish, she wept because of his weeping. He said: He wept and the woman wept before him. While he was thus, Sulaymān came from his need. When he saw ʿAṭāʾ weeping and the woman weeping before him, he sat down in a corner of the house weeping because of their weeping, not knowing what made them weep. Their companions came one by one; every man who came and saw them weeping sat down and wept because of their weeping, not asking them about their affair, until the weeping became abundant and the sound rose. When the Bedouin woman saw that, she got up and went out. He said: The people got up and went in. Sulaymān remained after that without asking his brother about the story of the woman, out of reverence and awe for him. He said: And he was older than him. Then they came to Muḍar for some need of theirs, and they stayed there as long as Allah willed. While ʿAṭāʾ was sleeping one night, he woke up weeping. Sulaymān said: What makes you weep, my brother? He said: A vision I saw tonight. He said: What is it? He said: Do not tell anyone about it as long as I am alive. I saw the prophet Yūsuf ﷺ in sleep, and I came to look at him among those who look. When I saw his beauty I wept. He looked at me and said: What makes you weep, O man? I said: May my father and mother be your ransom, O prophet of Allah. I remembered you and the wife of al-ʿAzīz, and what you were tried with regarding her affair, and what you met of prison and separation from Yaʿqūb. So I wept because of that and began to marvel at it. He said: Why do you not marvel at the companion of the Bedouin woman at al-Abwāʾ? Then I knew what he meant, and I wept and woke up weeping. Sulaymān said: My brother, and what was the affair of that woman? So ʿAṭāʾ told him the story. Sulaymān did not tell it to anyone until ʿAṭāʾ died, then he related it after him to a woman of his family, and the report spread in al-Madīnah after the death of ʿAṭāʾ b. Yasār. This story has been related to us from Sulaymān as having happened to him, and Allah knows best. ʿAṭāʾ died in this year, and it is said: in the year one hundred and four [and ninety]. Yazīd b. al-Aṣamm Yazīd b. al-Aṣamm, whose name is ʿAbd ʿAmr b. ʿUdus: His mother was Barzah bt. al-Ḥārith b. Ḥazn, sister of Maymūnah, wife of the Prophet ﷺ. He related from Abū Hurayrah and Ibn ʿAbbās, and he used to reside in al-Raqqah. He died in this year.
