Translation

✧ Mention of those among the notables who died in the year one hundred and two Yazīd b. al-Muhallab b. Abī Ṣufrah. Yazīd b. al-Muhallab b. Abī Ṣufrah, Abū Khālid al-Azdī: We have already mentioned his circumstances in the events, his rebellion against Yazīd b. ʿAbd al-Malik, and his fighting against him, and that he was killed in battle in this year. He was generous. From al-Madāʾinī, who said: Saʿīd b. ʿAmr was a sworn brother of Yazīd b. al-Muhallab. When ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz imprisoned Yazīd b. al-Muhallab, he prevented people from entering to see him. Saʿīd came to him and said: "O Commander of the Faithful, Yazīd owes me fifty thousand dirhams, and you have come between me and him. If you see fit to permit me, I will collect it from him." So he permitted him, and he entered upon him. Yazīd was delighted by him and said: "How did you reach me?" He informed him. He said: "By Allah, you will not leave except with it in your possession." Saʿīd refused, but Yazīd swore that he would accept it. So he sent to his house until fifty thousand dirhams were brought to Saʿīd. Al-Ṣūlī narrated, saying: Al-Kawthar b. Zufar entered upon Yazīd b. al-Muhallab when Sulaymān appointed him over Iraq. He said to him: "You are, by Allah, greater in worth than that help should be sought against you except through you. You do not perform any act of kindness but that it is smaller than you. It is not surprising that you do it; rather, the surprise is that you do not do it." Yazīd said: "Ask for your need." He said: "I have borne on behalf of a people ten bloodwits, and that has burdened me." He said: "I have ordered it for you, and I have doubled it with the like of it." Al-Kawthar said to him: "As for what I asked you for with my face, I accept it from you, but as for what you initiated me with, I have no need of it." He said: "Why, when I have spared you in it the humiliation of asking?" He said: "Indeed, what you took from me by my asking you and my lowering my face to you is greater in my eyes than your kindness, so I disliked the excess over me." Yazīd said: "And I ask you, as you asked me, by your right over me, which you have made me worthy of by your bringing your need to me, only accept it." So he did. He was among the famous brave men, and he had many conquests. He has reports of generosity and bravery. The end of his affair was that he was killed, and a group of his brothers and sons were killed with him. His wealth, women, and children were seized, and what he had was gone. They were about eighty souls, the family of al-Muhallab b. Abī Ṣufrah. They had gathered a great deal of wealth and jewels, but that availed them nothing; rather, they were stripped of all of it. ʿAdī b. Arṭāh. ʿAdī b. Arṭāh al-Fazārī, the deputy of ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz over al-Baṣrah. He is the one who arrested Yazīd b. al-Muhallab and sent him in chains to ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz. When he came to him, he ordered him imprisoned. When ʿUmar fell ill, he escaped from prison. When ʿUmar died, Yazīd b. al-Muhallab emerged, raised black banners, sought al-Baṣrah and took possession of it, and episodes occurred to him which Ibn Jarīr has mentioned. Then Muʿāwiyah b. Yazīd b. al-Muhallab, when news of his father's killing reached him, brought this ʿAdī b. Arṭāh out of prison and killed him, and killed with him a group of about thirty people. Al-Ḍaḥḥāk b. Muzāḥim al-Hilālī. Al-Ḍaḥḥāk b. Muzāḥim al-Hilālī, Abū al-Qāsim, and it is said Abū Muḥammad, al-Khurāsānī. He used to be in Balkh, Samarqand, and Nīsābūr. He was an eminent Successor. He narrated from Anas, Ibn ʿAbbās, Ibn ʿUmar, Abū Hurayrah, and a group of the Successors. It is said that he did not have sound hearing from the Companions, not even from Ibn ʿAbbās, although it is narrated from him that he was his neighbor for seven years. Al-Ḍaḥḥāk was an imam in Qurʾānic exegesis. Al-Thawrī said: "Take exegesis from four: Mujāhid, ʿIkrimah, Saʿīd b. Jubayr, and al-Ḍaḥḥāk." Al-Imām Aḥmad said: "He is trustworthy and reliable." Ibn Maʿīn and Abū Zurʿah said: "He is trustworthy." Shuʿbah denied his hearing from Ibn ʿAbbās, and said: "He only took from Saʿīd, from him." Ibn Saʿīd al-Qaṭṭān said: "He was weak." Ibn Ḥibbān mentioned him in "al-Thiqāt" and said: "He did not meet any of the Companions face to face. Whoever says that he met Ibn ʿAbbās has erred." His mother carried him for two years, and gave birth to him with teeth. He used to teach children for no pay. It is said that in his school there were three thousand boys, and he would ride a donkey and go around from al-ʿAlyāʾ to them. It is said that he died in the year one hundred and five, and it is said the year one hundred and six. He had reached eighty. And Allah knows best. Qabīṣah b. Qays al-ʿAnbarī said: "When al-Ḍaḥḥāk b. Muzāḥim entered the evening, he would weep, and it was said to him: 'What makes you weep?' He would say: 'I do not know what of my deeds has ascended today.'" Abū al-Mutawakkil ʿAlī b. Dāwūd al-Nājī. Abū al-Mutawakkil ʿAlī b. Dāwūd al-Nājī, an eminent Successor, trustworthy, of high standing.
