✧ The appointment of Saʿīd al-Ḥarashī over Khurasan In the year one hundred and three The governor of Iraq—who was ʿUmar b. Hubayra—dismissed Saʿīd, nicknamed Khudhayna, from the vice-regency of Khurasan and appointed over it Saʿīd b. ʿAmr al-Ḥarashī, with the permission of the Commander of the Faithful. This Saʿīd was one of the famous heroes; the Turks were alarmed by him and feared him greatly, and they retreated from the lands of al-Ṣughd to beyond that, to the lands of China and elsewhere. The reason for his dismissal was that al-Mujashshir b. Muzāḥim al-Sulamī and ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUmayr al-Laythī came to ʿUmar b. Hubayra and complained about him, so he dismissed him and appointed Saʿīd b. ʿAmr al-Ḥarashī (with an unpointed ḥāʾ and a pointed shīn, of Banū al-Ḥarīsh b. Kaʿb b. Rabīʿa b. ʿĀmir b. Ṣaʿṣaʿa). Khudhayna was [raiding] at the gate of Samarqand when news of his dismissal reached him, and he left behind in Samarqand a thousand men. It is said: ʿUmar b. Hubayra wrote to Yazīd b. ʿAbd al-Malik with the names of those who had distinguished themselves on the Day of al-ʿAqr, and he did not mention Saʿīd al-Ḥarashī. So Yazīd said: Why did he not mention al-Ḥarashī? And he wrote to ʿUmar b. Hubayra: Appoint al-Ḥarashī over Khurasan. So he appointed him, and he sent ahead of him al-Mujashshir b. Muzāḥim al-Sulamī. Nahār b. Tawsiʿa said: Is there one to convey to the youths of my people that the arrows have been feathered with every feather, And that God has replaced Saʿīd With a Saʿīd who is not the effeminate one of Quraysh. Saʿīd al-Ḥarashī arrived in Khurasan, and he did not interfere with Khudhayna's agents. A man read his covenant and made a grammatical error in it, and he said: Enough. Whatever you hear is from the scribe, and the governor is innocent of it. When al-Ḥarashī arrived in Khurasan, the people were facing the enemy, and they had suffered a setback. He addressed them and urged them to jihād, saying: You do not fight with numbers or equipment, but with God's support and the might of Islam. So say: There is no power and no strength except in God, the Most High, the Almighty. And he said: I am not of ʿĀmir if you do not see me before the horsemen, thrusting with the spearheads, And striking the crown of the tyrant among them with a sharp-edged sword, newly polished. I am not one to cower in wars, nor do I fear the assaults of men. My father disdained every blame for me, and my maternal uncle is the best of uncles in misfortunes. When the people of al-Ṣughd heard of al-Ḥarashī's arrival, they feared for themselves, because they had aided the Turks during the days of Khudhayna. Their nobles gathered and resolved to leave their lands. Their king said to them: Do not do that. Stay, pay the land tax for what is past, guarantee him the land tax for what is to come and the cultivation of the land, and military expeditions with him if he wishes that, and apologize for what you did and give him hostages. They said: We fear that he will not be satisfied and will not accept that from us, but let us go to Khujanda and seek the protection of its king, and send to the governor asking him to pardon what we did, and assure him that he will never see from us anything he dislikes. He said: I am one of you, and what I have advised you is better for you. They refused and went out to Khujanda, and sent to the king of Farghāna asking him to protect them and settle them in his city. He wanted to do so, but his mother said: Do not let these devils enter your city, but empty for them a rural district in which they may dwell. So he sent to them: Name a rural district in which you will dwell so that I may empty it for you, and grant me a delay of forty days—or, it is said, twenty days. They chose the mountain pass of ʿIṣām b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Bāhilī, whom Qutayba had left behind among them. He said: Yes, but you have no pact or protection from me until you enter it, and if the Arabs come to you before you enter it, I will not defend you. They agreed, and he emptied the mountain pass for them.
