Translation
✧ The Killing of Yazīd b. Abī Muslim It was said: Yazīd b. ʿAbd al-Malik had appointed Yazīd b. Abī Muslim over Ifrīqiyya in the year one hundred and one, and it was also said in this year. The cause of his killing was that he resolved to proceed among them according to the policy of al-Ḥajjāj regarding the people of Islam who dwelt in the garrison towns, those whose origin was from the Sawād, from among the people of the covenant, and who had embraced Islam in Iraq. For he returned them to their villages and imposed the jizya upon their necks in the manner it used to be taken from them while they were unbelievers. When Yazīd resolved upon that, their opinion came together upon killing him, so they killed him and appointed over themselves the governor who had been over them before Yazīd b. Abī Muslim, namely Muḥammad b. Yazīd. He took charge of the garrison towns, and he was with them. They wrote to Yazīd b. ʿAbd al-Malik: "We have not withdrawn our hands from obedience, but Yazīd b. Abī Muslim imposed upon us what God and the Muslims do not approve, so we killed him and restored your agent." Yazīd b. ʿAbd al-Malik wrote to them: "I do not approve of what Yazīd b. Abī Muslim did," and he confirmed Muḥammad b. Yazīd in his office.
