✧ The campaign against Sughd In the year one hundred and two, Saʿīd Khudhayna crossed the river and campaigned against Sughd. (They had broken the covenant and aided the Turks against the Muslims. People said to Saʿīd, “You have abandoned campaigning while the Turks have raided and the people of Sughd have disbelieved.” So he crossed the river and made for Sughd.) The Turks and a party of the Sughdians met him, and the Muslims defeated them. Saʿīd said, “Do not pursue them, for Sughd is the garden of the Commander of the Faithful, and you have defeated them. Do you want their ruin? You, O people of Iraq, have fought the caliphs more than once—did they annihilate you?” Sawra b. al-Ḥurr said to Ḥayyān al-Nabaṭī, “Turn back from them, O Ḥayyān.” He said, “By God’s sacrifice, I will not leave it.” He said, “Withdraw, O Nabataean.” He said, “May God make your face Nabataean!” The Muslims marched on and came to a valley between them and the meadow. Some of them crossed it, while the Turks had lain in ambush for them. When the Muslims came to them, they came out against them, and the Muslims were routed until they reached the valley, where they held firm until they were exposed to them. It was also said: rather, the routed ones were the Muslims’ advance guard. They were not aware until the Turks came out against them from a thicket, with Shuʿba b. Ẓuhayr in command of the cavalry. The Turks caught them before they could mount, and Shuʿba fought them and was killed, along with about fifty men. The advance guard fled, and the news reached the Muslims. Al-Khalīl b. Aws al-ʿAbshamī, one of the Banū Ẓālim, rode out and called, “O Banū Tamīm, to me! I am al-Khalīl!” A group gathered with him, and he charged the enemy with them. They held them off until the commander and the people arrived, and the enemy was routed. Al-Khalīl then took command of the cavalry of Banū Tamīm until Naṣr b. Sayyār was appointed; then their leadership passed to his brother al-Ḥakam b. Aws. The following year he sent men of Tamīm to Wazghīsh, and they said, “Would that we might meet the enemy and skirmish with them.” Saʿīd, whenever he sent out a raiding party and they captured, plundered, or took captives, would return the captives and punish the raiding party. The poet al-Hajarī said: You marched by night against the enemies, toying with a plaything, Your member unsheathed and your sword sheathed; To those you oppose you are a hidden bride, But upon us you are like an Indian blade. So Saʿīd sat back from the people, and they deemed him weak. There was a man of Banū Asad called Ismāʿīl who was attached to Marwān b. Muḥammad. Ismāʿīl mentioned his affection for Marwān in Khudhayna’s presence, and Khudhayna said, “And what is that thieving rogue?” Ismāʿīl said: Khudhayna claims that I am a thieving rogue; Khudhayna’s are the mirror and the comb, And braziers and kohl-pots prepared, And lutes, and on her cheek a mole. Is that it, or doubled mail coats, And an Indian sword whose business is cutting, Belonging to a stallion, remembered, a trusted brother, Whom effeminacy and picking up scraps never reared— among other verses.
