Translation
✧ The arrest of Yazīd b. al-Muhallab and the appointment of al-Jarrāḥ over Khurāsān It is said: In the year one hundred of the Hijrah, ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz wrote to ʿAdī b. Arṭāh, ordering him to send Yazīd b. al-Muhallab to him in fetters. ʿUmar had written to him to appoint a successor over his governorship and come to him. He appointed his son Mukhallad as his successor, and he came from Khurāsān and alighted at Wāsiṭ. Then he boarded ships wanting to go to al-Baṣrah. ʿAdī b. Arṭāh sent Mūsā b. al-Wajīh al-Ḥimyarī, and he caught up with him in the canal of Maʿqil near the bridge. He bound him and sent him to ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz. ʿUmar summoned him. He disliked Yazīd and his household, and he used to say: These are tyrants, and I do not love their like. Yazīd used to dislike ʿUmar and say: He is a hypocrite. When ʿUmar took charge, Yazīd knew that he was far from hypocrisy. When ʿUmar summoned Yazīd, he asked him about the monies about which he had written to Sulaymān. He said: I was with Sulaymān in the station that you have seen, and I only wrote to Sulaymān to make the people hear of it. I knew that Sulaymān would not hold me to it. He said to him: I find nothing for your affair except to imprison you. Fear God and deliver what is with you, for it is the right of the Muslims, and it is not proper for me to leave it. He imprisoned him in the fortress of Aleppo. He sent al-Jarrāḥ b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Ḥakamī and dispatched him to Khurāsān as its governor. Mukhallad b. Yazīd came from Khurāsān giving people gifts, and he distributed great sums of money. Then he came to ʿUmar and said to him: O Commander of the Faithful, God has done good to this community through your governorship, and we have been tried by you. Let us not be the most wretched of people because of your governorship. Why do you imprison this old man? I will take responsibility for what is upon him. Make a settlement with me for what you ask. ʿUmar said: No, unless he delivers the whole. He said: O Commander of the Faithful, if you have clear proof, take it; otherwise, believe the statement of Yazīd and make him swear. If he does not, then make a settlement with him. ʿUmar said: I will not take from him except the whole of the money. Mukhallad went out from his presence, and ʿUmar said: This one is better than his father. Mukhallad did not remain long before he died. ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz prayed over him and said: Today the young man of the Arabs has died. He recited: They wept for Ḥudhayfah; they did not weep for his like, until creatures not yet created pass away. When Yazīd refused to deliver anything to ʿUmar, he clothed him in a woolen jubbah and mounted him on a camel, and said: Take him away to Dahlak. When he went out and they passed with him among the people, he began to say: Do I have no kinsmen? Only the dissolute and the thief go to Dahlak. Salāmah b. Nuʿaym al-Khawlānī entered upon ʿUmar and said: O Commander of the Faithful, return Yazīd to his prison, for I fear that if you send him off, his people will snatch him away, for they have banded together for him. So he returned him to his prison, and he remained in it until the news of ʿUmar’s illness reached him.
