Some of his children said: He used to complete the Qurʾan every Friday, and a bed would be spread for him but he would not sleep on it. They said: He was silent, keeping apart from trials. He did not abandon enjoining good and forbidding evil, and he would not mention any of his praiseworthy traits. He saw on one of the commanders a silk garment and disapproved of it, and the man said: I only wear it because of those—and he pointed to ʿAbd al-Malik b. Marwān, Commander of the Faithful. Ibn Muḥayrīz said to him: Do not equate your fear of God with the fear of any person. He was devout, pious, ascetic, and full of humility. It is said that a fire broke out in his house and they extinguished it while he was in prayer, unaware of it. He had many merits, may God have mercy on him. I say: Once part of the mosque collapsed, and the people of the market were alarmed by its crash, while he was in the mosque praying and did not turn around. His son said: I saw him prostrating, saying: When shall I meet You while You are pleased with me? Then he would go on in supplication, then say: When shall I meet You while You are pleased with me? When he was not in prayer, it was as if he were in prayer. His biography has been presented earlier. Ḥanash b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAmr al-Ṣanʿānī He was governor of Ifrīqiyyah and the lands of the Maghrib, and he died in Ifrīqiyyah on a military campaign. Sulaymān b. ʿAbd al-Malik set upon him someone who gave it to him. When he sensed that, he returned to Muḥammad b. ʿAlī b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAbbās while he was at al-Ḥumaymah, and he informed him of his condition, and told him that the caliphate would pass to his son, and told him what to do. Then he died with him. In the days of Sulaymān died ʿUbayd Allāh b. Shurayḥ, the famous singer, and ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Kaʿb b. Mālik Abū al-Khaṭṭāb. Ibrāhīm b. Muḥammad b. Ṭalḥah b. ʿUbayd Allāh al-Taymī, Ibrāhīm b. Muḥammad b. Ṭalḥah b. ʿUbayd Allāh al-Taymī: He was noble and generous, called the Lion of Quraysh and the Lion of the Ḥijāz. He was lame. He was the brother of ʿAbd Allāh b. Ḥasan [b. Ḥasan] b. ʿAlī through his mother Fāṭimah bt. al-Ḥusayn. He narrated from Abū Hurayrah, Ibn ʿUmar, and Ibn ʿAbbās. ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Zubayr appointed him over the land tax of Kufa. He died at Minā on the night of Muzdalifah while in iḥrām, and was buried below al-ʿAqabah. From Abū Bakr al-Marwazī, who said: I was told that ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz said: When al-Ḥajjāj b. Yūsuf took charge of the two sanctuaries after the killing of Ibn al-Zubayr, he summoned Ibrāhīm b. Muḥammad b. Ṭalḥah b. ʿUbayd Allāh and brought him near in rank. He remained thus with him until he went out to ʿAbd al-Malik b. Marwān as a visitor to him. He went out as his equal, not omitting his honor and veneration. When he reached the gate of ʿAbd al-Malik, he came with him, and he entered upon ʿAbd al-Malik, and after greeting he began with nothing more worthy than saying: I have come to you, O Commander of the Faithful, with the man of the Ḥijāz. By God, I have not left in it his like in complete manliness, refinement, good conduct, obedience, and sincerity, along with kinship and the obligation of his right and the merit of fatherhood: Ibrāhīm b. Muḥammad b. Ṭalḥah b. ʿUbayd Allāh. I have brought him to your gate to make your permission easy for him, and that you meet him with your cheerful welcome, and do with him what you do with the like of him among those whose ways are like his ways. ʿAbd al-Malik said: You have reminded us of an obligatory right and a near kinship. Boy, give permission to Ibrāhīm b. Muḥammad b. Ṭalḥah. When he entered, he brought him near until he seated him on his couch, then said to him: O son of Ṭalḥah, Abū Muḥammad has reminded us of what we have always known of you in excellence, refinement, and good conduct, along with kinship and the obligation of right. So do not leave any need in your private or public affair without mentioning it. He said: O Commander of the Faithful, the most fitting matters with which needs are opened and nearness hoped is what is pleasing to God, mighty and glorious, and what fulfills the right of His Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ and is sincere counsel to you and to the community of Muslims. I have a sincere counsel that I must mention, and it can only be revealed when you are alone. So grant me privacy so that my counsel may reach you. He said: Without Abū Muḥammad? He said: Without Abū Muḥammad. He said: Rise, O Ḥajjāj. When he passed beyond the curtain, he said: Speak, O Abū Ṭalḥah, your counsel. He said: O Commander of the Faithful, you have taken al-Ḥajjāj in his arrogance, his harshness, his distance from the truth, and his inclination to falsehood, and appointed him over the two sanctuaries, in which are those who are in them—among the Emigrants, the Helpers, the clients, and the righteous, the Companions of the Messenger of God ﷺ and the sons of the Companions—he humiliates them, tramples them with tyranny, judges among them contrary to the Sunnah, and treads upon them with low fellows from Syria and rabble who have no judgment in upholding a right or removing a falsehood. Then you thought that this, between you and God, is insignificant, and between you and the Messenger of God ﷺ when he sits before you for his dispute with you over his community. By God, you will not escape there except with an argument that guarantees you salvation. So restrain yourself, or desist. He said: You lie, and you are contemptible. Al-Ḥajjāj thought of you what we did not find in you. Often good is thought of one unworthy of it. Rise, for you are the liar, the contemptible. He said: So I rose, not seeing my way. When I passed beyond the curtain, someone from his side caught up with me and said to the chamberlain: Detain this one. Enter, O Abū Muḥammad. He said: Al-Ḥajjāj entered and remained a long while, and I did not doubt that they were discussing my affair. Then the doorkeeper came out: Rise, O Abū Ṭalḥah, enter. I rose, and when the curtain was lifted for me, al-Ḥajjāj met me as he was leaving and I was entering. He embraced me and kissed me between the eyes, then said: If God rewards brothers who keep ties for the excellence of their mutual connection, may God reward you with the best reward a brother gives a brother. By God, if you are safe, I will raise your station, elevate your hand, and make men follow the dust of your feet. He said: I said: You mock me. When I reached ʿAbd al-Malik, he drew me near until he seated me in my first place, then said: O son of Ṭalḥah, perhaps someone among the people shared in your counsel. I said: No, by God, and I know no one who showed me more kindness or clearer favor than al-Ḥajjāj. If I were to favor anyone in my religion, it would be him, but I preferred God, mighty and glorious, and His Messenger ﷺ and the Muslims, and you over him. He said: I knew that you preferred God. Had you wanted this world, al-Ḥajjāj would have sufficed you. I have removed al-Ḥajjāj from the two sanctuaries and informed him that you brought me down from them for him, belittling them for him, and I have appointed him over the two Iraqs because of the affairs there that none like him can repel. I informed him that you called me to appoint him over them as an increase for him, so that your counsel would bind him to what he owes me to you in right, and you would attain with him what you deserve. So go out with him, for you will not blame his company. 544 Saʿīd b. Abī al-Ḥasan, brother of al-Ḥasan al-Baṣrī, Saʿīd b. Abī al-Ḥasan, brother of al-Ḥasan al-Baṣrī: Muḥammad b. Saʿd narrated with his chain from Yūnus b. ʿUbayd, who said: When Saʿīd b. Abī al-Ḥasan died, al-Ḥasan grieved for him with intense grief. He withheld from speaking until it was noticed in his assembly and his conversation. He was spoken to about that, and he said: Praise be to God who did not make grief a disgrace upon Jacob. Then he said: How wretched is the abode that separates. Ibn ʿAwn said: Al-Ḥasan handed me a hooded cloak that had belonged to his brother Saʿīd to sell it. I said: I will buy it myself. He said: You know best, but I would not like to see it on you. ʿAbd Allāh b. Maṭar, Abū Rayḥānah, ʿAbd Allāh b. Maṭar, Abū Rayḥānah: He narrated from Ibn ʿUmar and Safīnah. From Farwah al-Aʿmā, who said: Abū Rayḥānah traveled by sea, and he used to sew on it with a needle he had. His needle fell into the sea, and he said: I adjure You, O Lord, to return my needle to me. It appeared until he took it. He said: The sea became violent one day and raged, and he said: Be still, O sea, for you are only a black slave. It became still until it was like oil. ʿAbd Allāh b. Khārijah b. Ḥabīb b. Qays b. ʿAmr b. Ḥārithah b. Abī Rabīʿah b. Dhuhl b. Shaybān: A poet from the people of Kufa, partisan to the Umayyads. He is al-Aʿshā, the Aʿshā of Banū Rabīʿah. He entered upon ʿAbd al-Malik b. Marwān and recited to him, saying: I am not, in my affair or in my dispute, one whose right is diminished, nor one who clashes with his peer, nor one who surrenders his master at a crime, nor does my master fear the evil of what I commit. My heart, between my two sides, is aware of what my eye has seen and my ear has heard. He favored me in poetry and intelligence because I speak on knowledge and know whom I mean. So I have become, when I prefer Marwān and his son over the people, one who prefers the best father and son. ʿAbd al-Malik said: Who blames me for this? And he ordered for him ten thousand dirhams, ten boxes of garments, and ten young she-camels, and he granted him a thousand jarībs of land. One day he entered upon him and recited, saying: I saw you yesterday the best of Banū Maʿadd, and today you are better than you were yesterday, and tomorrow you will increase double upon double; thus do the lords of ʿAbd Shams increase. Al-Qāsim b. Mukhaymirah al-Hamdānī, al-Qāsim b. Mukhaymirah al-Hamdānī: Of Kufan origin, then he settled in Syria. He narrated from ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUmar and from many of the Successors. Muḥammad b. Abī al-Qāsim informed us with his chain from al-Awzāʿī, from al-Qāsim, that he disliked hunting birds during the days of their fledglings. Saʿīd b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz narrated from al-Qāsim b. Mukhaymirah, who said: Two kinds of food never came together on my table, and I never locked my door while I had a worry behind it. I went to ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz and he paid off seventy dinars for me, mounted me on a mule, and assigned me a stipend among fifty. I said: You have made me independent of trade. Then he asked me about a hadith, and I said: Pardon me, O Commander of the Faithful. It was as if he disliked relating to him afterward because of the gift.
