Translation
✧ Those of the notables who died in the year ninety-eight ʿUbayd Allāh b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUtbah b. Masʿūd al-Hudhalī, whose kunyah was Abū ʿAbd Allāh, and he was an ally of the Banū Zuhrah b. Kilāb: He related from Abū Hurayrah, Ibn ʿAbbās, Abū Ṭalḥah, Sahl b. Ḥunayf, Zayd b. Khālid, Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī, and ʿĀʾishah. He was trustworthy and a jurist, and he is one of the seven jurists and among their most eminent, and he was, moreover, an eloquent poet. His grandfather ʿUtbah b. Masʿūd, the full brother of ʿAbd Allāh b. Masʿūd, was an early convert to Islam and did not relate anything from the Messenger of God ﷺ, and he died during the caliphate of ʿUmar. As for his son ʿAbd Allāh, he settled in al-Kūfah and died there during the caliphate of ʿAbd al-Malik. ʿUbayd Allāh died in Madinah in the year ninety-eight. It is also said: in the year ninety-nine. Al-Zuhrī used to call him a sea. ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz said: If only he had reached me when I fell into what I fell into. ʿUmar used to say: Who can procure for me a night like one of the nights of ʿUbayd Allāh b. ʿAbd Allāh for a thousand dinars? He had lost his sight, [and he recited poetry]. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Abī al-Zinād related from his father, who said: A woman from Hudhayl came to Madinah, and she was extremely beautiful. People desired her and sought her hand in marriage, and she nearly stole the minds of most of them. ʿUbayd Allāh b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUtbah b. Masʿūd said: I love you with a love the like of which no near one loves you, nor any far one among the lovers. I love you with a love, if you perceived some of it, you would be generous, and no hardship would be difficult for you. And your love, O mother of the boy, bewilders me; my witness is Abū Bakr, and an excellent witness he is. And al-Qāsim b. Muḥammad knows my passion, and ʿUrwah, what I encounter because of you, and Saʿīd. And Sulaymān knows what I conceal with his knowledge, and Khārijah, who reveals and repeats about us. Whenever you ask about what I say and are informed, to God belongs my newly acquired and inherited wealth. Saʿīd b. al-Musayyab said: As for you, by God, you are safe from our being asked, and you did not aspire, if you asked us, that we should bear false witness for you. Al-Zubayr said: These are the ones whom ʿUbayd Allāh called as witnesses, and they are with him the seven jurists of Madinah from whom legal opinion was taken. He died in this year. Also in this year died Abū ʿUbayd, the client of ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAwf, known as the client of Ibn Azhar, and ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Zayd b. Ḥārithah al-Anṣārī, and Saʿīd b. Marjānah, a client of Quraysh, and she was his mother, and his father's name was ʿAbd Allāh.
