The Year 98
فِي سنة ثمان وتسعين تُوُفِّيَ أَيُّوبُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ وَهُوَ وَلِيُّ عَهْدٍ . وَفِيهَا غَزَا دَاوُدُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ أَرْضَ الرُّومِ، فَفَتَحَ حِصْنَ الْمَرْأَةِ مِمَّا يَلِي مَلَطْيَةَ. وَفِيهَا كَانَتِ الزَّلَازِلُ فِي الدُّنْيَا كَثِيرَةٌ وَدَامَتْ سِتَّةَ أَشْهُرٍ. وَحَجَّ بِالنَّاسِ عَبْدُ الْعَزِيزِ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ خَالِدِ بْنِ أَسِيدٍ، وَهُوَ أَمِيرٌ عَلَى مَكَّةَ، وَكَانَ الْعُمَّالُ مَنْ تَقَدَّمَ ذِكْرُهُمْ إِلَّا الْبَصْرَةَ، فَإِنَّ يَزِيدَ اسْتَعْمَلَ عَلَيْهَا سُفْيَانَ بْنَ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الْكِنْدِيَّ. وَفِيهَا غَزَا الْوَلِيدُ بْنُ هِشَامٍ وَعَمْرُو بْنُ قَيْسٍ، فَأُصِيبَ نَاسٌ مِنْ أَهْلِ أَنْطَاكِيَّةَ، وَأَصَابَ الْوَلِيدُ نَاسًا مِنْ ضَوَاحِي الرُّومِ، وَأَسَرَ مِنْهُمْ بَشَرًا كَثِيرًا.
Translation
✧ In the year ninety-eight, Ayyūb b. Sulaymān b. ʿAbd al-Malik died, and he was heir apparent. In it, Dāwūd b. Sulaymān raided the land of the Byzantines, and he conquered the fortress of al-Marʾah, which lies adjacent to Malaṭyah. In it, there were many earthquakes throughout the world, lasting six months. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Khālid b. Asīd led the pilgrimage for the people, and he was governor of Makkah. The governors were those previously mentioned, except for al-Baṣrah, for Yazīd appointed over it Sufyān b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Kindī. In it, al-Walīd b. Hishām and ʿAmr b. Qays raided, and some people from the inhabitants of Antioch were killed, and al-Walīd struck people from the outskirts of the Byzantines and took many captives from them.
