Translation

✧ Mention of the notables who died in the year ninety-six: Qurrah b. Sharīk al-Qaysī. In the year ninety-six, Qurrah b. Sharīk al-Qaysī, governor of Egypt on behalf of al-Walīd, died in Ṣafar. It is also said he died in the year ninety-five, in the same month in which al-Ḥajjāj died. In that year Shurayḥ the judge died—though it is also said in the year ninety-seven—at the age of one hundred and twenty. In that year ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Abī Bakrah died. And Maḥmūd b. Labīd al-Anṣārī, a Companion. Ibrāhīm b. Yazīd b. al-Aswad, Abū ʿImrān al-Nakhaʿī: He was an imam in jurisprudence, whom the notables held in high esteem. Saʿīd b. Jubayr used to say: "Do you ask me for legal opinions while Ibrāhīm is among you?" He inspired great awe, being held in awe as a ruler is held in awe. He dreaded giving legal opinions, despised himself, and said: "I have become needed." He disliked leaning against a pillar and would not speak until he was asked. People took knowledge from him when he was eighteen. He fasted one day and broke his fast the next. From Muḥammad b. Muslim al-Zuhrī, who said: I came to ʿAbd al-Malik b. Marwān, and he said to me: "Where have you come from, O Zuhrī?" I said: "From Makkah." He said: "Whom did you leave there leading its people?" I said: "ʿAṭāʾ b. Abī Rabāḥ." He said: "From the Arabs or from the mawālī?" I said: "From the mawālī." He said: "By what does he lead them?" I said: "By piety and transmission." He said: "Indeed, the people of piety and transmission deserve to lead. So who leads the people of Yemen?" I said: "Ṭāwūs b. Kaysān." He said: "From the Arabs or from the mawālī?" I said: "From the mawālī." He said: "By what does he lead them?" I said: "By the same as ʿAṭāʾ leads them." He said: "That is fitting." He said: "So who leads the people of Egypt?" I said: "Yazīd b. Abī Ḥabīb." He said: "From the Arabs or from the mawālī?" I said: "From the mawālī, a Nubian slave freed by a woman of Hudhayl." He said: "So who leads the people of the Jazīrah?" I said: "Maymūn b. Mihrān." He said: "From the Arabs or from the mawālī?" I said: "From the mawālī." He said: "So who leads the people of Baṣrah?" I said: "Al-Ḥusayn b. Abī al-Ḥasan." He said: "From the Arabs or from the mawālī?" I said: "From the mawālī." He said: "Woe to you! So who leads the people of Kūfah?" I said: "Ibrāhīm al-Nakhaʿī." He said: "From the Arabs or from the mawālī?" I said: "From the Arabs." He said: "Woe to you, O Zuhrī! You have relieved me. By God, the mawālī will indeed lead the Arabs until sermons are delivered for them from the pulpits while the Arabs are beneath them." I said: "O Commander of the Faithful, it is but the command of God and His religion. Whoever preserves it leads, and whoever neglects it falls." From Ibrāhīm, who said: "I have spoken, and had I found any alternative I would not have spoken. Indeed, a time in which I am the jurist of Kūfah is an evil time." From al-Aʿmash, who said: Ibrāhīm al-Nakhaʿī and I went out intending to go to the congregational mosque. When we came to the winding streets of Kūfah, he said to me: "O Sulaymān." I said: "At your service." He said: "Would you like us to take the winding streets of Kūfah so that we do not pass by its fools, who would look at a one-eyed man and a bleary-eyed man and backbite us, thus sinning?" I said: "O Abū ʿImrān, what harm is it to you if we are rewarded and they sin?" He said: "Glory be to God! Rather, that we and they remain safe is better than that we are rewarded and they sin." From ʿImrān the tailor, who said: We entered upon Ibrāhīm al-Nakhaʿī to visit him in his illness while he was weeping. We said: "What makes you weep?" He said: "I await the Angel of Death, not knowing whether he will give me glad tidings of Paradise or of Hell." Ibrāhīm al-Nakhaʿī met Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī and ʿĀʾishah, and most of what he narrates is from the Successors such as ʿAlqamah, Masrūq, and al-Aswad. He died in this year at the age of forty-nine—though it is also said he was a little over fifty. Al-Shaʿbī used to say: "By God, he left behind no one like him." ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAmr b. ʿUthmān b. ʿAffān: His mother was Ḥafṣah bt. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb. He died in Egypt in this year. To this man four caliphs gave daughters in marriage. He had a daughter named ʿAbdah whom al-Walīd b. ʿAbd al-Malik married; a daughter called Umm Saʿīd whom Yazīd b. ʿAbd al-Malik married; Ruqayyah whom Hishām b. ʿAbd al-Malik married; and a daughter named ʿĀʾishah whom Sulaymān b. ʿAbd al-Malik married.
