The Year 97
وفي سَنَةُ سَبْعٍ وَتِسْعِينَ جَهَّزَ سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ الْجُيُوشَ إِلَى الْقُسْطَنْطِينِيَّةِ . وَفِيهَا أَمَّرَ ابْنَهُ دَاوُدَ عَلَى الصَّائِفَةِ، فَفَتَحَ حِصْنَ الْمَرْأَةِ. قَالَ الْوَاقِدِيُّ: وَفِيهَا غَزَا مَسْلَمَةُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ أَرْضَ الْوَضَّاحِيَّةِ فَافْتَتَحَ الْحِصْنَ الَّذِي فَتَحَهُ الْوَضَّاحُ صَاحِبُ الْوَضَّاحِيَّةِ. وَفِيهَا غَزَا مَسْلَمَةُ أَيْضًا بَرْجَمَةَ، فَفَتَحَ حُصُونًا، وَبَرْجَمَةَ، وَحِصْنَ الْحَدِيدِ وَسَرْدَوْسَلَ، وَشَتَّى بِأَرْضِ الرُّومِ. وَفِيهَا غَزَا عُمَرُ بْنُ هُبَيْرَةَ الْفَزَارِيُّ فِي الْبَحْرِ أَرْضَ الرُّومِ وَشَتَّى بِهَا. وَفِيهَا عُزِلَ دَاوُدُ بْنُ طَلْحَةَ الْحَضْرَمِيُّ عَنْ مَكَّةَ، وَكَانَ عَمَلُهُ عَلَيْهَا سِتَّةَ أَشْهُرٍ، وَوُلِّيَ عَبْدُ الْعَزِيزِ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ خَالِدٍ.
Translation
✧ In the year ninety-seven: Sulaymān b. ʿAbd al-Malik equipped the armies for Constantinople. In it he appointed his son Dāwūd over the summer expedition, and he conquered the Fortress of the Woman. Al-Wāqidī said: In it Maslamah b. ʿAbd al-Malik raided the land of al-Waḍḍāḥiyyah, and he conquered the fortress which al-Waḍḍāḥ, the lord of al-Waḍḍāḥiyyah, had conquered. In it Maslamah also raided Barjamah, and he conquered fortresses, and Barjamah, and the Iron Fortress, and Sardawsal, and he wintered in the land of the Byzantines. In it ʿUmar b. Hubayrah al-Fazārī raided by sea the land of the Byzantines and wintered there. In it Dāwūd b. Ṭalḥah al-Ḥaḍramī was dismissed from Makkah, after his tenure over it had been six months, and ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Khālid was appointed.
