Translation
✧ The Expedition to al-Shāsh and Farghānah In the year ninety-four, Qutaybah b. Muslim raided al-Shāsh and Farghānah until he reached Khujandah, and Kāshān, the two cities of Farghānah. That was after he had finished with al-Ṣughd and the conquest of Samarqand. Then he plunged into those lands, conquering in them until he reached Kābul. He besieged it and conquered it. The polytheists met him in huge gatherings of Turks, and Qutaybah fought them at Khujandah several times. In all of that, victory was his. Ibn Jarīr said: Saḥbān Wāʾil said, mentioning their fighting at Khujandah: Ask the horsemen at Khujan- dah, beneath the sharpened spearheads: Was I gathering them when they were routed, and advancing in my fighting? Or was I striking the crown of the rebellious one, and enduring the duels? This, while you are the paramount of Qays, all of it, great in bounty. And you surpassed Qays in generosity, and your father in the bygone pilgrimages. Your manliness was perfected, and your might vied with the mountain peaks. And the justice of your judgment among them became clear in every matter. Thus Ibn Jarīr mentioned that this is from the poetry of Saḥbān Wāʾil concerning this expedition. We have mentioned what Ibn al-Jawzī cited in his Muntaẓam: that Saḥbān died during the caliphate of Muʿāwiyah b. Abī Sufyān after the fifties, so God knows best.
