The Year Ninety-One
Translation
✧ [And in the year ninety-one al-Walīd b. ʿAbd al-Malik performed the pilgrimage] Al-Wāqidī said, with his chain of transmission from Ṣāliḥ b. Kaysān, who said: When al-Walīd's arrival was imminent, ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ordered twenty men of Quraysh to go out with him. They went out and met him at al-Suwaydāʾ. When he entered Madinah, he went early to the mosque to look at its construction. He had the people removed from it, so no one was left in it. Saʿīd b. al-Musayyib remained; none of the guards dared to make him leave. He had on him only two thin cloaks worth no more than five dirhams, at his prayer place. He was told, "If only you would stand up." He said, "By God, I will not stand until the time comes when I usually stand." He was told, "If only you would greet the Commander of the Faithful." He said, "No, by God, I will not stand for him." ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz said: I began to steer al-Walīd toward a side of the mosque, hoping that he would not see Saʿīd b. al-Musayyib until he stood up. Al-Walīd happened to glance—or he said: look—toward the qibla, and said, "Who is that seated one? Is it the elder Saʿīd b. al-Musayyib?" ʿUmar said, "Yes, O Commander of the Faithful, such is his condition and such is his state; if he knew your place, he would have stood to greet you." Al-Walīd walked around the mosque until he stopped [at the grave, then he came forward until he stopped] before Saʿīd b. al-Musayyib, and said, "How are you, O elder?" [By God, Saʿīd did not stir nor stand.] He said, "Fine, praise be to God. How is the Commander of the Faithful and how is his state?" Al-Walīd said, "Fine, praise be to God." He left, saying to ʿUmar, "This is the remnant of the people." He replied, "Indeed, O Commander of the Faithful." Al-Walīd distributed in Madinah many slaves among the people, and vessels of gold and silver, and wealth. Then al-Walīd gave a sermon from the pulpit of the Messenger of God ﷺ. He sat during the first sermon and stood upright during the second. Isḥāq b. Yaḥyā said: I said to Rajāʾ b. Ḥaywa, who was with him, "Is this how you do it?" He said, "Yes," repeating it, "and this is how Muʿāwiya did it, and so on." He said: I said to him, "Why don't you speak to him?" He said, "Qabīṣa b. Dhuʾayb informed me that he spoke to ʿAbd al-Malik, and he did not abandon sitting, and said, 'This is how ʿUthmān gave the sermon.'" He said: I said, "By God, he only gave the sermon standing." Rajāʾ said, "Something was narrated to them, and they followed it." Isḥāq said: We have not seen among them anyone more arrogant than him. Al-Wāqidī said: He brought perfume and covering for the Kaʿba. Al-Madāʾinī said: Muḥammad b. Yūsuf performed the pilgrimage from Yemen and brought gifts for al-Walīd. Umm al-Banīn said to al-Walīd, "Give me Muḥammad b. Yūsuf's gift." He ordered it to be turned over to her. Umm al-Banīn went to Muḥammad about it, but he refused and said, "Until the Commander of the Faithful looks at it and gives his opinion." The gifts were numerous. She said, "O Commander of the Faithful, you ordered Muḥammad's gifts to be turned over to me, but I have no need of them." He said, "Why?" She said, "It has reached me that he seized them by force, burdened the people with their production, and wronged them." Muḥammad brought the goods to al-Walīd, who said to him, "It has reached me that you obtained them by seizure." He said, "God forbid." So he ordered that he swear between the Corner and the Station fifty oaths that he did not seize any of them by force, did not wrong anyone, and obtained them only from what is lawful. He swore, and al-Walīd accepted them and gave them to Umm al-Banīn. Muḥammad died in Yemen; a disease afflicted him and he was cut off by it. The governors of the garrison cities in this year were those previously mentioned in the preceding year, except for Makkah. Al-Wāqidī says its governor was Khālid b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Qasrī. Others said: rather it was ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz.
