✧ The campaign against Shūmān, Kishsh, and Nasaf In the year ninety-one, Qutaybah marched to Shūmān and besieged it. The reason for that was that its king had expelled Qutaybah's governor from his presence. So Qutaybah sent to him two messengers, one of them an Arab named ʿAyyāsh and the other from the people of Khurāsān, calling upon the king of Shūmān to pay what he had agreed to in the peace treaty. They arrived at Shūmān, and its people came out to them and shot at them. The Khurāsānī turned back, but ʿAyyāsh fought them and they killed him; they found sixty wounds on him. His killing reached Qutaybah, so he marched against them in person. When he came to it, Ṣāliḥ b. Muslim, the brother of Qutaybah, sent a man to its king—and he was a friend of his—commanding him to obey and guaranteeing him Qutaybah's satisfaction if he returned to the peace agreement. But he refused and said to Ṣāliḥ's messenger: "Do you frighten me with Qutaybah while I have the most impregnable fortress among kings?" Qutaybah came to him after he had fortified himself in his town, and he set up mangonels against it and shot at the fortress and shattered it, killing a man in the king's assembly with a stone. When he feared that Qutaybah would overcome him, he gathered what was in the fortress of wealth and jewels and threw it into a well in the citadel whose depth could not be reached. Then he opened the citadel and came out to them and fought them until he was killed. Qutaybah took the citadel by force, killed the fighting men, and took the offspring captive. Then he marched to Kishsh and Nasaf and conquered them. Fārayāb resisted him, so he burned it, and it was called "the Burned." From Kishsh and Nasaf he sent his brother ʿAbd al-Raḥmān to Sughd, whose king was Ṭarkhūn. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān received from Ṭarkhūn what Qutaybah had made peace with him for, and handed over to him hostages who had been with him. He returned to Qutaybah in Bukhārā, for Qutaybah had marched there from Kishsh and Nasaf. Then they returned to Marw. When Qutaybah was in Bukhārā, he made Bukhārā Khudāh king, and he was a young lad, and he killed those he feared would oppose him. It is said that Qutaybah marched in person to Sughd. When he turned back from them, the Sughdians said to Ṭarkhūn: "You have accepted humiliation and deemed the jizyah agreeable, and you are an old man, so we have no need of you." They imprisoned him and appointed Ghūzak, and Ṭarkhūn killed himself.
