The Year Ninety-One

✧ The account of Qutaybah with Nīzak. In the year ninety-one, Qutaybah b. Muslim pacified the lands of the Turks who had broken the peace treaty they had made with him, after fierce fighting and a war in which the newborn would turn gray. Their kings had promised one another in the past year at the time of spring to gather and fight Qutaybah, and not to turn away from battle until they expelled the Arabs from their lands. They gathered in a terrifying assembly the like of which they had not gathered in any confrontation. Qutaybah defeated them, killed great multitudes of them, and restored matters to their former state, such that it is mentioned that in some places he crucified from among the prisoners he had taken two rows whose length was four parasangs from here and there. He pursued Nīzak Khān, the greatest king of the Turks, from region to region, from district to district, and from rural township to rural township. When he conquered al-Ṭālaqān, he appointed his brother ʿUmar b. Muslim as governor, and it is said that its king did not fight Qutaybah, so he spared him. There were thieves there, and Qutaybah killed them and crucified them. Then Qutaybah marched to al-Fāriyāb, and its king came out to him acknowledging and submitting, so he accepted from him and killed no one, and appointed over it a man from his own people. The news of them reached the king of al-Jūzjān, so he fled to the mountains. Qutaybah marched to al-Jūzjān, and its people met him, hearing and obeying, so he accepted from them and killed no one there, and appointed over it ʿĀmir b. Mālik al-Ḥimmānī. Then he came to Balkh, and its people met him, but he stayed there only one day, and marched following his brother ʿAbd al-Raḥmān to the pass of Khulm. Nīzak went on to Baghlān, and left fighters at the mouth of the pass and its narrows to prevent him, and placed his fighters in a fortified castle beyond the pass. Qutaybah stayed for days fighting them at the narrows of the pass, unable to enter it and knowing no route to Nīzak except the pass or a desert that armies could not bear, so he remained bewildered. A man came forward and sought a pledge of safety from him on condition that he guide him to the entrance of the castle beyond the pass. Qutaybah granted him safety, and sent men with him. He brought them to the castle beyond the pass of Khulm, and they fell upon them while they were secure, and killed them. Those of them who remained and those who were in the pass fled, and Qutaybah entered the pass, came to the castle, and went on to Siminjān, where he stayed for days. Then he marched to Nīzak, and his brother ʿAbd al-Raḥmān came forward. Nīzak departed from his camp and crossed the valley of Farghānah, and directed his baggage and wealth to Kābul Shāh, and went on until he alighted at al-Kurz, while ʿAbd al-Raḥmān followed him and alighted opposite al-Kurz. Qutaybah alighted at a camp between him and ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, two parasangs away. Nīzak fortified himself in al-Kurz, where there was no access except from one direction, and it was difficult, such that beasts could not manage it. Qutaybah besieged him for two months until Nīzak's food ran low and smallpox afflicted them, and Jabghūyah caught smallpox. Qutaybah feared the winter, so he summoned Sulaym the adviser and said: "Go to Nīzak and use stratagem to bring him to me without a guarantee of safety. If he resorts to stratagem and refuses, then grant him safety. And know that if I see you and he is not with you, I will crucify you." He said: "Write to ʿAbd al-Raḥmān not to oppose me." So he wrote to him, and he came to him and said: "Send men to be at the mouth of the pass, so that when I and Nīzak come out, they may turn behind us and come between us and the pass." ʿAbd al-Raḥmān sent cavalry, and they were there. Sulaym carried with him foods and sweetmeats as loads, and came to Nīzak and said to him: "You have treated Qutaybah badly and acted treacherously." Nīzak said: "What is the right course?" He said: "I think you should go to him, for he will not depart, and he has resolved to spend the winter in his place, whether he perishes or is safe." Nīzak said: "How can I go to him without a guarantee of safety?" He said: "I do not think he will grant you safety because of what is in his heart against you, for you have filled him with rage. But I think he should not know of you until you place your hand in his hand, for I hope he will be ashamed and pardon you." He said: "I see my soul refusing this; if he sees me, he will kill me." Sulaym said: "I came to you only to advise you of this, and if you did it, I would hope you would be safe and your standing with him would be restored. Since you refuse, I am leaving." Sulaym brought forward the food he had with him, the like of which they had not known, and Nīzak's companions snatched it up, which distressed him. Sulaym said to him: "I am one of your sincere advisers; I see your companions are exhausted, and if the siege lasts long, I cannot guarantee they will not seek safety by surrendering you. So go to Qutaybah." He said: "I do not trust him with my life, and I will not go to him except with a guarantee of safety. I think he will kill me even if he gives me safety, but the guarantee is a better excuse for me." Sulaym said: "I have guaranteed your safety; do you suspect me?" He said: "No." His companions said to him: "Accept Sulaym's words, for he speaks only the truth." So he went out with him, along with Jabghūyah and Ṣūl Ṭarkhān, Jabghūyah's deputy, while he detained Ṭarkhān, his chief of police, and Shaqrān, Nīzak's nephew. When they came out of the pass, the cavalry that Sulaym had left behind turned and came between the Turks, Nīzak's companions, and the exit. Nīzak said: "This is the first act of treachery." Sulaym said: "The holding back of these from you is better for you." Sulaym, Nīzak, and those with him came forward until they entered upon Qutaybah, and he imprisoned them and wrote to al-Ḥajjāj seeking permission to kill Nīzak. Qutaybah sent Muʿāwiyah b. ʿĀmir b. ʿAlqamah al-ʿAlīmī, who brought out what was in al-Kurz of goods and those who were in it, and came with them to Qutaybah. He waited with them for al-Ḥajjāj's letter, and al-Ḥajjāj's letter came to him after forty days, ordering him to kill Nīzak. Qutaybah summoned the people and consulted them about killing him, and they differed. Ḍirār b. Ḥuṣayn said: "I heard you say: 'I made a covenant with God that if He enabled you against him, you would kill him.' If you do not do it, God will never help you against him again." So he summoned Nīzak and struck his neck with his own hand, and ordered the killing of Ṣūl and Nīzak's nephew, and killed seven hundred of his companions, and it is said twelve thousand, and crucified Nīzak and his nephew, and sent his head to al-Ḥajjāj. Nahār b. Tawsiʿah said concerning the killing of Nīzak: By my life, the army's expedition was blessed, an expedition that fulfilled its vow against Nīzak and rose high. Al-Zubayr, the client of ʿAbbās al-Bāhilī, took a casket belonging to Nīzak containing jewels, and he was the wealthiest in his land in money and property from such jewels. Qutaybah released Jabghūyah and showed favor to him, and sent him to al-Walīd, and he remained in Syria until al-Walīd died. People used to say that Qutaybah acted treacherously toward Nīzak, and one of them said: Do not reckon treachery as resolve, for many a time feet climbed by it and one day slipped. When Qutaybah killed Nīzak, he returned to Marw. The king of al-Jūzjān sent asking for a guarantee of safety, and Qutaybah granted him safety on condition that he come to him. He asked for a hostage and to give hostages, so Qutaybah gave him Ḥabīb b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Ḥabīb al-Bāhilī, and the king of al-Jūzjān gave hostages from his own household, and came to Qutaybah and made peace with him. Then he returned and died at al-Ṭālaqān. The people of al-Jūzjān said that they had poisoned him, so they killed Ḥabīb, and Qutaybah killed the hostages who were with him.
