The Year Ninety-One

Translation

✧ In the year ninety-one, al-Walīd appointed Khālid b. ʿAbd al-Qasrī over Makkah. He remained governor until al-Walīd died. When he became governor of Makkah, he addressed them and emphasized the matter of the caliphate, urging them to obedience. He said: If I knew that this wild beast which is safe in the sanctuary, if it spoke, would not acknowledge obedience, I would expel it from it. So adhere to obedience and cling to the community; for by God, if anyone is brought to me who disparages his imam, I will crucify him in the sanctuary. I see nothing in what the caliph has written or decided but to carry it out. And he was severe upon them. On the authority of ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Ḥabīb b. Abī Ḥabīb, from his father, from his grandfather, who said: I heard Khālid b. [ʿAbd Allāh] al-Qasrī addressing the people, and he said: Whoever of you wishes to offer a sacrifice, let him go and sacrifice, and may God bless him in his sacrifice. For I am sacrificing al-Jaʿd b. Dirham, for he claimed that God did not speak to Moses directly, and that He did not take Abraham as an intimate friend. So glory be to God, far above what al-Jaʿd says, in great sublimity. Then he descended and slaughtered him.
