✧ ʿUtbah b. ʿAbd al-Sulamī In this year, among the notables, died: ʿUtbah b. ʿAbd al-Sulamī A noble Companion, he settled in Homs. It is narrated that he witnessed [the campaign against] Banū Qurayẓah. On the authority of al-ʿIrbāḍ, he used to say: "He is better than I; he accepted Islam a year before me." Al-Wāqidī and others said: He died in this year. Others said: after the ninetieth. And Allah knows best. Abū Saʿīd b. al-Aʿrābī said: ʿUtbah b. ʿAbd al-Sulamī was one of the People of the Ṣuffah. On the authority of ʿUtbah b. ʿAbd al-Sulamī, that the Prophet ﷺ said: "If a man were to be dragged on his face from the day he was born to the day he dies, aged, in the pleasure of Allah, he would deem it insignificant on the Day of Resurrection." On the authority of ʿUtbah b. ʿAbd al-Sulamī, he said: I complained to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ of nakedness, and he clothed me with two coarse garments. I saw myself wearing them, and I was the most clothed of my companions. Al-Miqdām b. Maʿdīkarib Al-Miqdām b. Maʿdīkarib, a noble Companion, also settled in Homs. He has hadiths, and more than one of the Successors narrated from him. Muḥammad b. Saʿd, al-Fallās, and Abū ʿUbayd said: He died in this year. Others said: He died after the ninetieth. And Allah knows best. Qabīṣah b. Dhuʾayb Qabīṣah b. Dhuʾayb, Abū Sufyān al-Khuzāʿī al-Madanī He was born in the year of the conquest, and he was brought to the Prophet ﷺ so that he might supplicate for him. He narrated from a large group of the Companions. His eye was injured on the day of al-Ḥarrah. He was one of the jurists of Medina, and he had a position with ʿAbd al-Malik, and he would enter upon him without permission. He used to read the letters when they arrived from the provinces, then he would enter upon ʿAbd al-Malik and inform him of what had arrived from the provinces in them. He was the keeper of his secret. He had a house in Damascus at the Bāb al-Barīd, and he died in Damascus. ʿUrwah b. al-Mughīrah b. Shuʿbah ʿUrwah b. al-Mughīrah b. Shuʿbah He held the governorship of Kufa for al-Ḥajjāj. He was noble, intelligent, and obeyed among the people. He was cross-eyed. He died in Kufa. Yaḥyā b. Yaʿmur Yaḥyā b. Yaʿmur He was the judge of Marw, and he was the first to dot the muṣḥafs. He was one of the virtuous and learned people. He had spiritual states and dealings, and he had narrations. He was one of the eloquent ones, and he took Arabic grammar from Abū al-Aswad al-Duʾalī. Shurayḥ b. al-Ḥārith b. Qays Shurayḥ b. al-Ḥārith b. Qays, the judge He lived into the pre-Islamic era. ʿUmar appointed him as judge over Kufa, and he remained there as judge for sixty-five years. He was knowledgeable, just, abundant in goodness, of excellent character, and he had much jesting. He was beardless, with no hair on his face, as were also ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Zubayr, al-Aḥnaf b. Qays, and Qays b. ʿUbādah. We have written his biography in "al-Takmīl" with what suffices. There is disagreement about his lineage, age, and year of death according to various statements, and Ibn Khallikān gave weight to his death in this year. And Allah knows best. Abū Saʿd al-Qurashī Nawfal b. Musāḥiq b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Makhramah, Abū Saʿd al-Qurashī: Muṣʿab b. ʿAbd Allāh said: Nawfal b. Musāḥiq was one of the nobles of Quraysh. He had a special favor from al-Walīd b. ʿAbd al-Malik, and al-Walīd was fond of the bathhouse and had one made for himself and would fly to it. Nawfal was brought in to him while he was at the bathhouse. Al-Walīd said to him: "I have singled you out for this entrance so that I may be refreshed by your company." He said: "O Commander of the Faithful, by Allah, you have not singled me out, but you have debased me. This is a private place, and someone like me should not enter upon someone like this." So he sent him [to] Medina and was angry with him. He used to oversee the collection of taxes. One of the governors took him to account. He said: "Where are the sheep?" He said: "We ate them with bread." He said: "Where are the camels?" He said: "We loaded the saddles on them." He used not to set aside anything for the governors from the taxes, dividing it and feeding it. His son after him, Saʿd b. Nawfal, used to oversee the alms.
