Then the Year Eighty-Seven Began

ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz as Governor of Madinah Then the year eighty-seven began. In it al-Walīd b. ʿAbd al-Malik dismissed Hishām b. Ismāʿīl from the governorship of Madinah, and appointed over it his paternal cousin and the husband of his sister — Fāṭimah bt. ʿAbd al-Malik — ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz. He entered it on thirty camels in Rabīʿ al-Awwal of that year, and alighted at the residence of Marwān. The people came to greet him — his age then being twenty-five years — and when he had performed the noon prayer he summoned ten of the jurists of Madinah, namely: ʿUrwah b. al-Zubayr, ʿUbayd Allāh b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUtbah, Abū Bakr b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. al-Ḥārith b. Hishām, Abū Bakr b. Sulaymān b. Abī Khaythamah, Sulaymān b. Yasār, al-Qāsim b. Muḥammad, Sālim b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUmar, his brother ʿUbayd Allāh b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUmar, ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿĀmir b. Rabīʿah, and Khārijah b. Zayd b. Thābit. They entered upon him and sat down. He praised God and lauded Him as He deserves, then said: 'I have summoned you only for a matter for which you will be rewarded, and in which you will be helpers of the truth. I do not wish to decide any matter except by your counsel, or by the counsel of whoever of you is present. If you see anyone transgressing, or if you hear of any injustice by one of my agents, I adjure whoever learns of that to inform me.' They departed from him, rewarding him with good, and separated upon that. Al-Walīd's letter to ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz to make Hishām b. Ismāʿīl stand for the people Al-Walīd wrote to ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz instructing him to make Hishām b. Ismāʿīl stand for the people at the residence of Marwān. He had a bad opinion of him because he had mistreated the people of Madinah during his period of governorship over them, which was about four years, especially toward Saʿīd b. al-Musayyab, and toward ʿAlī b. al-Ḥusayn and his household. When he was made to stand for the people, Hishām said: 'I fear no one but Saʿīd and ʿAlī b. al-Ḥusayn.' Saʿīd b. al-Musayyab said to his son and his clients: 'Let none of you confront this man, for I have left that to God and to kinship. As for speaking to him, I shall never speak to him again.' As for ʿAlī b. al-Ḥusayn, he passed by him while he was standing at the residence of Marwān and did not confront him. He had previously instructed his close associates that none of them should confront him. When ʿAlī b. al-Ḥusayn passed by him and went beyond him, Hishām b. Ismāʿīl called out to him, saying: 'God knows best where to place His message.' Maslamah b. ʿAbd al-Malik's raid into Byzantine territory In this year Maslamah b. ʿAbd al-Malik raided Byzantine territory, killing many of them, conquering many fortresses, and taking abundant spoils. It is said that the one who raided Byzantine territory in this year was Hishām b. ʿAbd al-Malik, and he conquered the fortress of Būlaq, the fortress of al-Akhram, Buḥayrah al-Fursān, the fortress of Būlas, and Qumayqim, and killed about a thousand of the mustaʿribah, and took their offspring captive. The peace agreement between Qutaybah and Nīzak In it Qutaybah b. Muslim raided the land of the Turks, and their king Nīzak made peace with him for substantial wealth, and on condition that he release all Muslim captives in his land. Qutaybah's raid on Baykand In it Qutaybah raided Baykand. A great multitude and huge throng of Turks gathered against him there; it is one of the dependencies of Bukhārā. When he encamped in their land, they sought help against him from the people of al-Ṣughd and the Turks around them, and they came to them in a mighty gathering. They seized the roads and defiles against Qutaybah, and he and they faced each other for nearly two months, while he was unable to send a messenger to them, nor did any messenger come to him from their side. His news was delayed from al-Ḥajjāj until he feared for him, and he was anxious for the Muslims with him because of the great number of enemies among the Turks. He ordered the people to supplicate for them in the mosques, and wrote of that to the garrison cities. Qutaybah and the Muslims with him fought the Turks every day. Qutaybah had a spy from among the non-Arabs called Tandur. The people of Bukhārā gave him substantial wealth on condition that he come to Qutaybah and discourage him from attacking them. He came to him and said: 'Give me privacy.' He gave him privacy, and no one remained with him except a man called Ḍirār b. Ḥuṣayn. Tandur said to him: 'An agent is coming to you soon with the dismissal of al-Ḥajjāj, so if only you would withdraw with the people to Marw.' Qutaybah said to his client Siyāh: 'Strike his neck.' So he killed him. Then Qutaybah said to Ḍirār: 'No one has heard this except me and you. I give God a covenant: if this news emerges before our war is over, I shall surely join you to him. So guard your tongue, for the spread of this would weaken the people's resolve.' Then Qutaybah rose and urged the people to fight, and stood before the standard-bearers encouraging them. The people fought a fierce battle, and God sent down patience upon the Muslims. By mid-day God had sent down victory upon them. The Turks were routed with a mighty rout, and the Muslims pursued them, killing and capturing as they wished. Those of them who remained took refuge in the city. Qutaybah ordered the laborers to demolish it. They sought peace from him for great wealth, so he made peace with them, and placed over them a man from his own people, with a band of the army. Then he departed, returning. When he was five stages away from them, they broke the pact, killed the commander, and mutilated the noses of those with him. He returned to them and besieged it for a month, and ordered the sappers and laborers, and they suspended its wall on timber, intending to set fire to it. The wall collapsed, killing forty of the laborers. They sought peace from him, but he refused, and did not cease until he conquered it, killing the fighting men, taking the offspring captive, and seizing the wealth. The one who incited against the Muslims was a one-eyed man of theirs, and he was captured. He said: 'I shall ransom myself with five Chinese garments worth a million.' The commanders advised Qutaybah to accept that from him. Qutaybah said: 'No, by God, I shall not let you terrify a Muslim a second time.' He ordered him to be struck on the neck, and his neck was struck. The Muslims took from Baykand a great deal of gold and silver vessels, and idols of gold. In it was an idol that was melted down and yielded one hundred and fifty thousand dinars of gold. They found in the king's treasuries much wealth, many weapons, various equipment, and precious jewels, and they took many captives. Qutaybah wrote to al-Ḥajjāj asking that this be given to the troops, and he permitted him. The Muslims acquired very great wealth, and they obtained weapons and equipment, and were greatly strengthened against the enemies. To God belongs praise and favor. Who led the people in pilgrimage this year In this year ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz, the governor of Madinah, led the people in pilgrimage, and its judge there was Abū Bakr b. Muḥammad b. ʿAmr b. Ḥazm. Over Iraq and the entire East was al-Ḥajjāj b. Yūsuf al-Thaqafī, and his deputy over al-Baṣrah was al-Jarrāḥ b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Ḥakamī, and its judge there was ʿAbd Allāh b. Udhaynah. His agent for war in al-Kūfah was Ziyād b. Jarīr b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Bajalī, and its judge there was Abū Bakr b. Abī Mūsā al-Ashʿarī. His deputy over Khurāsān and its dependencies was Qutaybah b. Muslim.
