Translation

✧ Abān b. ʿUthmān b. ʿAffān Our shaykh, the ḥāfiẓ al-Dhahabī, said: He died in this year. Abān b. ʿUthmān b. ʿAffān Amīr of Madinah. He was one of the ten jurists of Madinah. This was said by Yaḥyā b. al-Qaṭṭān. Muḥammad b. Saʿd said: He was trustworthy. He had deafness and much leprosy, and hemiplegia afflicted him before he died. And ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿĀmir b. Rabīʿah And ʿAmr b. Ḥurayth And ʿAmr b. Salamah Wāthilah b. al-Asqaʿ And Wāthilah b. al-Asqaʿ Al-Wāqidī and Yaḥyā b. Maʿīn said: He used to live in the ṣuffah during the time of the Prophet ﷺ. Al-Wāqidī said: Wāthilah became Muslim while the Prophet ﷺ was equipping for Tabūk at the end of the matter. Wāthilah said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to us: How will you be after me when you are satiated with wheat bread and oil, and you eat various kinds of food, and you wear various kinds of clothing? Are you better today or that day? He said: We said: That day. He said: Rather, you are better today. Wāthilah said: The days did not pass from us until we ate various kinds of food, wore various kinds of clothing, and rode mounts. Wāthilah witnessed Tabūk, then he witnessed the conquest of Damascus and settled there. His mosque is there near the Ḥabs of Bāb al-Ṣaghīr from the qiblah. He was the last of the Companions to die in Damascus. This was said by Saʿīd b. Bashīr. Al-Bukhārī and others said that he died in the year eighty-three. And Allah knows best. Khālid b. Yazīd b. Muʿāwiyah b. Abī Sufyān Ṣakhr Khālid b. Yazīd b. Muʿāwiyah b. Abī Sufyān Ṣakhr b. Ḥarb b. Umayyah He was the most knowledgeable of Quraysh in the branches of learning. He had a long hand in medicine and much discourse on alchemy. He had acquired that from a monk named Maryānus. Khālid was eloquent, articulate, and an accomplished poet like his father. One day he entered upon ʿAbd al-Malik b. Marwān in the presence of al-Ḥakam b. Abī al-ʿĀṣ, and complained to him that his son al-Walīd belittled his brother ʿAbd Allāh b. Yazīd. ʿAbd al-Malik said: "When kings enter a town, they ruin it and make the noblest of its people the most abased" (Q 27:34). Khālid said to him: "And when We intend to destroy a town, We command its affluent ones, and they act wickedly therein, so the word is justified against it, and We destroy it utterly" (Q 17:16). ʿAbd al-Malik said: By Allah, your brother ʿAbd Allāh entered upon me, and he does not avoid grammatical errors. Khālid said: And al-Walīd does not avoid grammatical errors. ʿAbd al-Malik said: His brother Sulaymān does not err. Khālid said: And I, the brother of ʿAbd Allāh, do not err. Al-Walīd, who was present, said to Khālid b. Yazīd: Be quiet, for by Allah you are not counted among the caravan nor the war party. Khālid said: Listen, O Commander of the Faithful. Then Khālid turned to al-Walīd and said: Woe to you! What is the caravan and the war party but my grandfather Abū Sufyān, leader of the caravan, and my grandfather ʿUtbah b. Rabīʿah, leader of the war party? But if you had said: little sheep, little ropes, and al-Ṭāʾif—and may Allah have mercy on ʿUthmān—we would have said: You have spoken truthfully. Meaning that al-Ḥakam was banished in al-Ṭāʾif tending sheep and taking shelter among grape vines until ʿUthmān b. ʿAffān sheltered him when he came to power. Al-Walīd and his father fell silent and did not return an answer. And Allah, glorified and exalted be He, knows best. ʿAmr b. Ḥurayth al-Makhzūmī In this year ʿAmr b. Ḥurayth al-Makhzūmī died. ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Ḥārith b. Jazʾ al-Zubaydī In it died ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Ḥārith b. Jazʾ al-Zubaydī—it is also said in the year seven, and it is said in the year eighty-eight. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿĀmir b. Rabīʿah, ally of Banū ʿAdī In it died ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿĀmir b. Rabīʿah, ally of Banū ʿAdī. He was four years old when the Prophet ﷺ died.
