Then the Year Eighty-Five Began
Translation
✧ Mention of the allegiance to ʿAbd al-Malik for his son al-Walīd, then after him for his brother Sulaymān b. ʿAbd al-Malik. That was in this year after the death of ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. Marwān. Allegiance was sworn to him in Damascus, then in the rest of the provinces, then to Sulaymān after him. Then when the allegiance reached Madinah, Saʿīd b. al-Musayyab refused to swear allegiance to anyone during the lifetime of ʿAbd al-Malik. Hishām b. Ismāʿīl, the governor of Madinah, ordered that he be flogged with sixty lashes. He had him dressed in garments of hair, mounted on a camel, and paraded through Madinah. Then he ordered him taken to the pass of Dhubāb — the pass where they used to crucify and kill — but when they reached it, they returned him to Madinah and put him in prison. He said to them: "By God, if I knew that you would not kill me, I would not wear this loincloth." Then Hishām b. Ismāʿīl al-Makhzūmī wrote to ʿAbd al-Malik informing him of Saʿīd's opposition in that matter. He wrote back rebuking him for that and ordering him to release him, saying to him: "Saʿīd was more entitled than you to the ties of kinship than what you did to him. We know that Saʿīd has no discord or opposition." It is narrated that he said to him: "It is only fitting that he should swear allegiance. If he does not swear allegiance, then strike his neck or let him go." Al-Wāqidī mentioned that when the allegiance to ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Zubayr came to Madinah, Saʿīd, may God have mercy on him, refused to swear allegiance. The governor at that time — Jābir b. al-Aswad b. ʿAwf — flogged him with sixty lashes as well and imprisoned him, but God knows best.
