Translation

✧ The Campaign of Qutaybah b. Muslim in the Lands of the Turks Then the year eighty-six began. In it Qutaybah b. Muslim, deputy of al-Ḥajjāj over Marw and Khurāsān, raided many lands of the Turks and other disbelievers. He took captives and booty, remained safe, and received the surrender of fortresses, strongholds, and kingdoms. Then he returned, racing ahead of the army. Al-Ḥajjāj wrote to him, blaming him for that and saying to him: "When you are heading into enemy territory, be in the vanguard of the army; and when you are returning, be in the rear guard of the army"—meaning so that you may be a support for them lest anyone from the enemy or others reach them by cunning. This is sound judgment, and upon it the sunnah has come. Among the captives was the wife of Barmak—father of Khālid b. Barmak. Qutaybah gave her to his brother ʿAbd Allāh b. Muslim, and he had intercourse with her, so she became pregnant by him. Then Qutaybah showed favor toward the captives, and that woman was returned to her husband Barmak while she was pregnant from ʿAbd Allāh b. Muslim. Her child remained with them until they embraced Islam, and they brought him with them in the days of the Banū al-ʿAbbās, as will come. When Qutaybah returned to Khurāsān, the dihqāns of Bulghār and Ṣāghān met him with magnificent gifts and with a key of gold from Bulghār. Some have claimed that Qutaybah's arrival in Khurāsān was in the year eighty-five. The Plague of the Maidens In it there was a plague in Syria, al-Baṣrah, and Wāsiṭ, called the Plague of the Maidens because it first began among the women, so it was named for that. It is said that it was in the year eighty-seven. The Campaign of Maslamah b. ʿAbd al-Malik in the Lands of the Byzantines In it Maslamah b. ʿAbd al-Malik raided the lands of the Byzantines, killing, taking captives and booty, and remaining safe. He conquered the fortress of Būlq and the fortress of al-Akhram in Byzantine territory. The Appointment of ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAbd al-Malik over Egypt In it ʿAbd al-Malik appointed his son ʿAbd Allāh over Egypt, after the death of his brother ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz. He entered it in Jumādā al-Ākhirah, and his age that day was twenty-seven years. The Death of the King of the Byzantines al-Akhram Būrī In it the king of the Byzantines, al-Akhram Būrī, perished—may God not have mercy on him. Al-Ḥajjāj Imprisons Yazīd b. al-Muhallab In it al-Ḥajjāj imprisoned Yazīd b. al-Muhallab. Who Led the Pilgrimage This Year Hishām b. Ismāʿīl al-Makhzūmī led the pilgrimage in it. [The governor over Iraq and all the East was al-Ḥajjāj; over prayer in al-Kūfah was al-Mughīrah b. ʿAbd Allāh; over al-Baṣrah was Ayyūb b. al-Ḥakam; and over Khurāsān was Qutaybah b. Muslim].
