Then the Year Eighty-Two Began
Translation
✧ Then the year eighty-two began. In Muḥarram of it occurred the Battle of al-Zāwiyah between Ibn al-Ashʿath and al-Ḥajjāj at its end, and it was the first day for the people of Iraq against the people of Syria. Then they clashed another day, and Sufyān b. al-Abrad—one of the commanders of the people of Syria—charged the right wing of Ibn al-Ashʿath and routed it, and killed a great number of the Qurʾān reciters among Ibn al-Ashʿath's companions on that day. Al-Ḥajjāj fell prostrate to God after he had knelt on his knees, and drew something of his sword, and began to invoke mercy upon Muṣʿab b. al-Zubayr, saying: How noble he was when he steeled himself for slaughter. Among those killed of Ibn al-Ashʿath's companions was Abū al-Ṭufayl b. ʿĀmir b. Wāthilah al-Laythī. When Ibn al-Ashʿath's companions fled, Ibn al-Ashʿath returned with those who remained with him, and those who followed him from the people of Baṣrah, and marched until he entered al-Kūfah. The people of Baṣrah then turned to ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAbbās b. Rabīʿah b. al-Ḥārith b. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib and gave him allegiance, and he fought al-Ḥajjāj for five nights with the fiercest fighting. Then he departed and joined Ibn al-Ashʿath, and a group of the people of Baṣrah followed him. Al-Ḥajjāj appointed Ayyūb b. al-Ḥakam b. Abī ʿAqīl as his deputy over Baṣrah. Ibn al-Ashʿath entered al-Kūfah, and its people gave him allegiance to depose al-Ḥajjāj and ʿAbd al-Malik b. Marwān. The matter worsened, and Ibn al-Ashʿath's followers in that grew numerous. The situation became severe, the word was utterly divided, the affair became grave, and the breach widened. Al-Wāqidī said: When the army of al-Ḥajjāj and the army of Ibn al-Ashʿath met at al-Zāwiyah, the army of al-Ḥajjāj kept charging them time after time. The Qurʾān reciters—over whom was Jabalah b. Zaḥr—said: O people, flight from anyone is not more shameful than from you, so fight for your religion and your worldly life. Saʿīd b. Jubayr said something similar. Al-Shaʿbī said: Fight them for their injustice, their humiliation of the weak, and their killing of prayer. Then the Qurʾān reciters—who were the scholars—made a true charge against the army of al-Ḥajjāj and wrought havoc among them. Then they returned and found their vanguard commander Jabalah b. Zaḥr fallen, and that broke them. The army of al-Ḥajjāj called out: O enemies of God, we have killed your tyrant. Then Sufyān b. al-Abrad—who was over al-Ḥajjāj's cavalry—charged the left wing of Ibn al-Ashʿath—over which was al-Abrad b. Qurrah al-Tamīmī—and they were routed without fighting much. The people disapproved of that from them, for the commander of Ibn al-Ashʿath's left wing, al-Abrad, was brave and would not flee, and they thought that he had defected. The ranks were broken, and the people trampled one another. Ibn al-Ashʿath was urging the people to fight, but when he saw what the people were in, he took those who followed him and went to al-Kūfah, and its people gave him allegiance.
