Then the Year Eighty-Two Began
عزل أبان بن عثمان عن إمرة المدينة وَفِي جُمَادَى الْآخِرَةِ مِنْهَا عَزَلَ أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ عَبْدُ الْمَلِكِ بْنُ مَرْوَانَ عَنْ إِمْرَةِ الْمَدِينَةِ أَبَانَ بْنَ عُثْمَانَ، وَوَلَّى عَلَيْهَا هِشَامَ بْنَ إِسْمَاعِيلَ الْمَخْزُومِيَّ، وَكَانَتْ وِلَايَةُ أَبَانٍ عَلَى الْمَدِينَةِ سَبْعَ سِنِينَ وَثَلَاثَةَ أَشْهُرٍ وَثَلَاثَةَ عَشَرَ يَوْمًا، وَكَانَ عَلَى إِمْرَةِ بِلَادِ الْمَشْرِقِ بِكَمَالِهِ الْحَجَّاجُ بْنُ يُوسُفَ، وَالنُّوَّابُ فِي الْأَقَالِيمِ مِنْ تَحْتِ يَدِهِ، وَهُوَ مَشْغُولٌ عَنْ تَدْبِيرِ الْمَمَالِكِ بِحَرْبِ ابْنِ الْأَشْعَثِ فِي هَذِهِ الْمُدَّةِ كُلِّهَا. من حج بالناس هذه السنة قَالَ أَبُو مَعْشَرٍ: وَحَجَّ بِالنَّاسِ فِي هَذِهِ السَّنَةِ أَبَانُ بْنُ عُثْمَانَ الَّذِي كَانَ نَائِبَ الْمَدِينَةِ. صلح المهلب من وراء النهر وَفِيهَا: صَالَحَ الْمُهَلَّبُ مَنْ وَرَاءَ النَّهْرِ عَلَى شَيْءٍ يُؤَدُّونَهُ وَفَصَلَ عَنْهُمْ. غزو محمد بن مروان أرمينية وَفِيهَا غَزَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ مَرْوَانَ أَرْمِينِيَّةَ فَهَزَمَهُمْ، ثُمَّ سَأَلُوهُ الصُّلْحَ فَصَالَحَهُمْ، وَوَلَّى عَلَيْهِمْ أَبَا شَيْخٍ ابْنَ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، فَغَدَرُوا بِهِ فَقَتَلُوهُ، وَقِيلَ: بَلْ قَتَلُوهُ سَنَةَ ثَلَاثٍ وَثَمَانِينَ.
Translation
✧ Dismissal of Abān b. ʿUthmān from the governorship of Madinah In Jumādā al-Ākhirah of that year, the Commander of the Faithful ʿAbd al-Malik b. Marwān dismissed Abān b. ʿUthmān from the governorship of Madinah and appointed over it Hishām b. Ismāʿīl al-Makhzūmī. Abān's tenure over Madinah had lasted seven years, three months, and thirteen days. Al-Ḥajjāj b. Yūsuf was in charge of the entire lands of the East, with deputies in the provinces under his authority, and he was preoccupied from administering the realms by the war against Ibn al-Ashʿath throughout this entire period. Who led the people in pilgrimage this year Abū Maʿshar said: In this year Abān b. ʿUthmān, who had been the deputy of Madinah, led the people in pilgrimage. Al-Muhallab made peace with those beyond the river In this year, al-Muhallab made peace with those beyond the river on the basis of something they would pay, and he departed from them. Muḥammad b. Marwān's raid on Armenia In this year, Muḥammad b. Marwān raided Armenia and defeated them. Then they asked him for peace, so he made peace with them and appointed over them Abū Shaykh b. ʿAbd Allāh, but they betrayed him and killed him. It is also said: rather, they killed him in the year eighty-three.
