Then the Year Seventy-Seven Began

Turn aside to him, perhaps you may kill him, and the renown and fame of that will be yours forever.” When he marched, Shabīb met him and fought him, and Shabīb killed him. Another account is given, and Allah knows best. ʿIyāḍ b. ʿAmr al-Ashʿarī ʿIyāḍ b. ʿAmr al-Ashʿarī He witnessed al-Yarmūk and transmitted from a group of the Companions and others. He died in al-Baṣra, may Allah have mercy on him. Muṭarrif b. al-Mughīra b. Shuʿba Muṭarrif b. al-Mughīra b. Shuʿba They were brothers: ʿUrwa, Muṭarrif, and Ḥamza. They inclined toward the Umayyads, so al-Ḥajjāj appointed them over provinces. He appointed ʿUrwa over al-Kūfa, Muṭarrif over al-Madāʾin, and Ḥamza over Hamdān. The killing of Bukayr b. Wassāj In this year Umayya b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Khālid b. Usayd b. Abī al-ʿĪṣ b. Umayya killed Bukayr b. Wassāj. The reason was that Umayya b. ʿAbd Allāh, the governor of ʿAbd al-Malik b. Marwān over Khurāsān, ordered Bukayr to prepare for raiding what lies beyond the river. He had previously appointed him over Ṭukhāristān, so he prepared for that. Then Baḥīr b. Warqāʾ slandered him to Umayya, so he prevented him from it. When he ordered him to raid beyond the river, he prepared and spent a great deal of money and incurred debts for it. Baḥīr said to Umayya: “If the river comes between you and him, he will renounce the caliph.” Umayya sent to him: “Stay, perhaps I will raid and you will be with me.” Bukayr became angry and said: “It is as if he is harming me.” ʿUqāb Dhū al-Liqwa al-Ghudānī had borrowed money to go out with Bukayr, and his creditors seized him and imprisoned him until Bukayr paid on his behalf. Then Umayya prepared for the raid to Bukhārā, then from there he would return to Mūsā b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Khāzim at Tirmidh. The people prepared with him, including Bukayr, and they marched. When they reached the river and wanted to cross it, Umayya said to Bukayr: “I have appointed my son as my successor over Khurāsān, and I fear he will not manage it because he is a young lad. Return to Marw and suffice me in it, for I have appointed you over it, and attend to my son’s affairs.” Bukayr selected horsemen whom he knew and trusted and returned, while Umayya went on to Bukhārā for the raid. ʿUqāb Dhū al-Liqwa said to Bukayr: “We sought a commander from Quraysh, and a commander came to us who toys with us and moves us from one prison to another. I think you should burn these ships, go to Marw, renounce Umayya, stay in Marw, and consume it until some day.” Al-Aḥnaf b. ʿAbd Allāh al-ʿAnbarī agreed with him on this. Bukayr said: “I fear these horsemen with me will perish.” He said: “If these perish, I will bring you from the people of Marw whatever you wish.” He said: “The Muslims will perish.” He said: “It is enough for you that a crier calls out: ‘Whoever accepts Islam, we lift the land tax from him.’ Then fifty thousand will come to you, more obedient and more compliant than these.” He said: “Then Umayya and those with him will perish.” He said: “Why would they perish? They have numbers, equipment, bravery, and visible weapons. Let them fight for themselves until they reach China!” So Bukayr burned the ships and returned to Marw, and Umayya’s son seized him and renounced Umayya. The news reached Umayya, so he made peace with the people of Bukhārā for a small ransom, returned, ordered ships to be built, crossed, and reminded the people of his kindness to Bukayr time after time, and that he repaid him with disobedience. He marched to Marw. Mūsā b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Khāzim came to him. Umayya sent Shammās b. Dithār with eight hundred men. Bukayr marched against him and attacked him at night, defeating him. He ordered his companions not to kill anyone among them, so they took their weapons and released them. Umayya arrived, and Shammās met him. Umayya sent forward Thābit b. Quṭba, and Bukayr met him, captured Thābit, and scattered his force. Then he released him because of a favor Thābit had done for him. Umayya advanced and Bukayr fought him. One day his companions were exposed, and Bukayr protected them. Then they met another day and fought a fierce battle. Then they met another day, and Bukayr struck Thābit b. Quṭba on his head. Then Ḥurayth b. Quṭba, Thābit’s brother, charged at Bukayr, and Bukayr withdrew while his companions were exposed. Ḥurayth pursued Bukayr until he reached the bridge. He called to him: “Where to, O Bukayr?” He turned back, and Ḥurayth struck him on his head, cutting the helmet, and the sword bit into his head, so he fell. His companions carried him and brought him into the city, and they fought them. Bukayr’s companions used to go out in dyed garments of red and yellow and sit talking, while their crier called: “Whoever shoots an arrow, we will shoot back at him the head of a man from his children and family.” So no one shot at them. Bukayr feared that if the siege lasted long, the people would abandon him, so he sought peace. Umayya’s companions also desired that. They made peace on the condition that Umayya would pay four hundred thousand on his behalf, maintain his companions, appoint him over whichever district of Khurāsān he wished, not listen to Baḥīr’s words about him, and if any suspicion arose, he would be safe for forty days. Umayya entered the city of Marw, fulfilled his promise to Bukayr, and returned to his former honor. Umayya gave ʿUqāb twenty thousand. It was said that Bukayr did not accompany Umayya to the river; Umayya had appointed him as his successor over Marw. When Umayya marched and crossed the river, Bukayr renounced him, and the affair between them proceeded as we have described. Umayya was easygoing, gentle, and generous, yet he was burdensome to the people of Khurāsān. He had great arrogance and used to say: “Khurāsān is not enough for my kitchen.” Umayya dismissed Baḥīr from his police force and appointed ʿAṭāʾ b. Abī al-Sāʾib over it. Umayya demanded the land tax from the people and was harsh on them. One day Bukayr was in the mosque with people around him, and they mentioned Umayya’s harshness and criticized him. Baḥīr, Ḍirār b. Ḥuṣayn, and ʿAbd Allāh b. Jāriya b. Qudāma were in the mosque. Baḥīr reported that to Umayya, but he did not believe him. He claimed the testimony of these men, and Muzāḥim b. Abī al-Mujashshar al-Sulamī testified that he was only joking, so Umayya left him alone. Then Baḥīr came to Umayya and said: “By Allah, Bukayr invited me to renounce you and said: ‘Were it not for your position, I would kill this Qurashī and devour Khurāsān.’” Umayya did not believe him, so he called a group whom Bukayr mentioned were his enemies to bear witness. Umayya seized Bukayr and Badal and Shamardal, the sons of his brother. Then Umayya ordered some of the chiefs with him to kill Bukayr, but they refused. He ordered Baḥīr to kill him, and he killed him. Umayya killed the two sons of Bukayr’s brother. The death of Shabīb b. Yazīd al-Khārijī In this year was the death of Shabīb b. Yazīd al-Khārijī, as we mentioned earlier. He was of great courage and horsemanship, such that I have not seen after the Companions anyone like him, nor like al-Ashtar and his son Ibrāhīm, Muṣʿab b. al-Zubayr and his brother ʿAbd Allāh. Among those who are compared with these in courage are Qaṭarī b. al-Fujāʾa of the Azāriqa Khawārij, and Allah knows best. ʿUbayd b. ʿUmayr b. Qatāda ʿUbayd b. ʿUmayr b. Qatāda, Abū ʿĀṣim al-Laythī the preacher: He transmitted from Ubayy b. Kaʿb, Abū Dharr, Abū Qatāda, Ibn ʿUmar, Ibn ʿAmr, Abū Hurayra, Ibn ʿAbbās, and ʿĀʾisha. From among the major Successors, Mujāhid, ʿAṭāʾ, and Abū Ḥāzim transmitted from him. Mujāhid used to say: “We used to boast of our jurist and our judge: our jurist was Ibn ʿAbbās, and our judge was ʿUbayd b. ʿUmayr.” From ʿUbayd b. ʿUmayr, he said: “The people of the graves receive the dead as a rider is received. They ask him, and when they ask: ‘What did so-and-so do?’ and if he has died, they say: ‘Did he not come to you?’ They say: ‘Indeed we belong to Allah and to Him we return. He was taken to his mother, the Abyss.’” He said: Ṣāliḥ b. Aḥmad b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Muslim al-ʿIjlī said: My father narrated to me, saying: ʿAbd Allāh narrated to me, saying: There was a beautiful woman in Makkah, and she had a husband. One day she looked at her face in the mirror and said to her husband: “Do you think anyone who sees this face would not be tempted by it?” He said: “Yes.” She said: “Who?” He said: “ʿUbayd b. ʿUmayr.” She said: “Permit me to go to him, for I will tempt him.” He said: “I have permitted you.” He said: She came to him as if seeking a legal opinion, and he was alone with her in a corner of the Sacred Mosque. He said: She unveiled a face like a piece of the moon. He said to her: “Cover yourself, O maidservant of Allah.” She said: “I have been tempted by you, so consider my affair.” He said: “I will ask you about something; if you tell the truth, I will consider your affair.” She said: “Ask me about anything, and I will tell you the truth.” He said: “Tell me, if the Angel of Death came to you to seize your soul, would it please you that I fulfilled this need for you?” She said: “O Allah, no.” He said: “You have spoken truth. If you were placed in your grave and made to sit for questioning, would it please you that I fulfilled this need for you?” She said: “O Allah, no.” He said: “You have spoken truth. If people were given their records and you did not know whether you would take your record with your right hand or your left, would it please you that I fulfilled this need for you?” She said: “O Allah, no.” He said: “You have spoken truth. If you wanted to pass over the bridge and did not know whether you would be saved or not, would it please you that I fulfilled this need for you?” She said: “O Allah, no.” He said: “You have spoken truth. If the scales were brought and you were brought, and you did not know whether you would be light or heavy, would it please you that I fulfilled this need for you?” She said: “O Allah, no.” He said: “You have spoken truth. If you stood before Allah Almighty for questioning, would it please you that I fulfilled this need for you?” She said: “O Allah, no.” He said: “You have spoken truth. Fear Allah, O maidservant of Allah, for Allah has blessed you and been good to you.” He said: She returned to her husband. He said: “What did you do?” She said: “You are idle, and we are idle.” She turned to prayer, fasting, and worship. He said: Her husband used to say: “What is it with me and ʿUbayd b. ʿUmayr? He corrupted my wife. She used to be a bride for me every night, and he has turned her into a nun.”
