Translation
✧ Zuhayr b. Qays al-Balawī Zuhayr b. Qays al-Balawī He witnessed the conquest of Egypt and settled there. He was a Companion. The Byzantines killed him at Barqa in the Maghrib. That was because a cry for help reached the governor of Egypt—who was ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. Marwān—that the Byzantines had descended upon Barqa. He ordered him to march against them. Zuhayr set out with forty men, found the Byzantines, and wanted to refrain from fighting until the army caught up with him. They said: "O Abū Shaddād, lead us in an attack on them." So they attacked and were all killed. Al-Mundhir b. al-Jārūd He died in this year. He was in charge of the treasury and came as a delegate to Muʿāwiyah. And Allah, glorified be He, knows best. Ḥabba b. Juwayn al-ʿUranī In this year died Ḥabba b. Juwayn al-ʿUranī, the companion of ʿAlī. (Ḥabba is with an unpointed ḥ, a pointed b, and he is ascribed to ʿUrana, with a pointed, ḍammah-voweled ʿ, an unpointed r, and a nūn.) Al-Aswad b. Yazīd b. Qays Al-Aswad b. Yazīd b. Qays b. ʿAbd Allāh, Abū ʿAmr: He was the nephew of ʿAlqama b. Qays, and he was older than ʿAlqama. He narrated from Abū Bakr, ʿUmar, ʿAlī, Ibn Masʿūd, Muʿādh, Salmān, Abū Mūsā, and ʿĀʾishah. He did not narrate anything from ʿUthmān. He used to fast perpetually, so one of his eyes went blind, and his tongue used to turn black from intense heat. It was said to him: "Do not torment this body." He would say: "I only desire rest for it." From ʿAlqama b. Marthad, who said: "Al-Aswad b. Yazīd used to exert himself in worship, fasting until he turned green and yellow. When he was dying, he wept. It was said to him: 'What is this anguish?' He said: 'Why should I not anguish? Who is more entitled to that than I? By Allah, even if I were granted forgiveness from Allah, mighty and glorious be He, I would still be troubled by shame before Him because of what I have done. A man may have a small sin between him and another man, and the other man forgives him, yet he remains ashamed before him.'" He said: "Al-Aswad performed the pilgrimage eighty times." Al-Aswad died in Kufa in this year. Abū Umayya the Judge Shurayḥ b. al-Ḥārith b. Qays, Abū Umayya the Judge: ʿUmar appointed him over Kufa. He transmitted hadith from ʿUmar and ʿAlī. From ʿĀmir: A son of Shurayḥ said to his father: "There is a dispute between me and some people. Look into it, and if the right is on my side I will contend with them; if the right is not on my side I will contend." He told him his story. He said: "Go and contend with them." So he went to them, and they brought their dispute to him, and he ruled against his son. When he returned to his house, his son said to him: "By Allah, had you not come forward to me, I would not blame you. You have disgraced me." He said: "My son, by Allah, you are dearer to me than the fill of the earth of their like. But Allah is mightier to me than you. I feared that if I told you the judgment would be against you, you would settle with them and some of their right would be lost." From al-Shaʿbī, who said: "I attended Shurayḥ when a woman came to him disputing with a man. She let her eyes weep and cried. I said: 'Abū Umayya, I think this poor woman is wronged.' He said: 'O Shaʿbī, the brothers of Joseph came to their father at nightfall weeping.'" From Ibn ʿAwn, from Ibrāhīm, from Shurayḥ: "He ruled against a man based on his own confession. The man said: 'O Abū Umayya, you have ruled against me without evidence.' He said: 'The son of your maternal aunt's sister told me.'" From Abū Ḥayyān al-Taymī, who said: My father narrated to us, saying: "When a cat of his household died, Shurayḥ would order it to be thrown into the interior of his house, and he would not have a drain spout opening except into the interior of his house, out of caution against harming the Muslims." Shurayḥ died in this year. It was also said: in the year seventy-eight. He had reached the age of one hundred and eight years. [Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr mentioned that he died in the year eighty-seven, and that he reached the age of one hundred years.]
