Translation

✧ The Day of al-Kuḥayl It is part of the land of al-Mawṣil on the western side of the Tigris. Its reason is that when ʿUmayr b. al-Ḥubāb al-Sulamī was killed, Tamīm b. ʿUmayr came to Zufar b. al-Ḥārith and asked him to seek vengeance for him, but he refused. Then al-Hudhayl b. Zufar said to his father: By God, if Taghlib prevail over them, that would be a disgrace upon you; and if they prevail over Taghlib while you have let them down, that is even worse. So Zufar appointed his brother Aws b. al-Ḥārith as his successor over Qarqīsiyā, and resolved to raid Banū Taghlib and make war on them. He sent cavalry against Banū Fadawkas, a clan of Taghlib, and their men were killed, and their wealth and women were plundered until nothing remained but a single woman who sought protection, and Yazīd b. Ḥumrān granted her protection. Zufar b. al-Ḥārith sent his son al-Hudhayl with an army against Banū Kaʿb b. Zuhayr, and he inflicted a heavy slaughter among them. Zufar also sent Muslim b. Rabīʿa al-ʿUqaylī against the Taghlib tribe while they were gathered, and he increased the killing among them. Then Zufar headed for Banū Taghlib, who had gathered at al-ʿAqīq in the land of al-Mawṣil. When they sensed him, they departed aiming to cross the Tigris. When they reached al-Kuḥayl, Zufar caught up with them among the Qaysīs, and they fought a fierce battle. All of Zufar's companions dismounted, while Zufar remained on a mule of his. They fought them through their night, and they ripped open the bellies of women among them. More drowned in the Tigris than were killed by the sword. Their remnant came to Lubbā, so Zufar sent his son al-Hudhayl and fell upon them, except those who crossed and escaped. Zufar captured two hundred of them and killed them in cold blood. Zufar said: Alas, O eye, weep with outpouring, and weep for ʿĀṣim and the son of al-Ḥubāb. If Taghlib killed ʿUmayr and a band from Ghanī among the spears, then they have annihilated Banū Jusham b. Bakr and their Numayr, horsemen from Kilāb. We killed two hundred of them in cold blood, and they do not equal ʿUmayr b. al-Ḥubāb. Ibn Ṣaffār al-Muḥāribī said: Do you not see that our war has left Ḥubayb—its ally—with humiliation and contempt? They had been people of might, but they became such that they have no victory over their disgrace. Al-Qaṭāmī al-Taghlibī was taken captive on one of their days and his wealth was taken. Zufar took charge of his affair until his wealth was returned to him and he gave him gifts. He said about him: Indeed, even though between my people and your people there is nothing but the stroke of the guide— I praise you for the goodness you bestowed, though I was exposed to a manifest death.
