Translation

✧ The Day of al-Ḥashshāk, and the killing of ʿUmayr b. al-Ḥubāb al-Sulamī and Ibn Hawbar al-Taghlibī When Taghlib saw the persistence of ʿUmayr b. al-Ḥubāb against them, they gathered their settled and nomadic people, and marched to al-Ḥashshāk, which is a hill near al-Sharʿabiyyah, and beside it are rocky grounds. ʿUmayr advanced toward them among Qays, and with him were Zufar b. al-Ḥārith al-Kallāʾī and his son al-Hudhayl b. Zufar. Ibn Hawbar was in command of Taghlib. They fought at the hill of al-Ḥashshāk the fiercest and most harrowing battle, until night fell upon them. Then they dispersed and fought from the next morning until night, then they drew apart. Taghlib arose on the third day, and they made a pact that they would not flee. When ʿUmayr saw their resolve, and that their women were with them, he said to Qays: "O my people, I think you should withdraw from these, for they are seeking death. When they feel secure and return to their grazing lands, we shall send against every group of them someone to raid them." ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. Ḥātim b. al-Nuʿmān al-Bāhilī said to him: "You killed the horsemen of Qays yesterday and the day before, then your lungs filled and you became cowardly!" It is also said that ʿUyaynah b. Asmāʾ b. Khārijah al-Fazārī said that to him, and he had come to aid him. ʿUmayr became angry and said: "It is as if I see you, when the battle has intensified, the first to flee!" ʿUmayr dismounted and began fighting on foot, saying: I am ʿUmayr and Abū al-Mughallis; I may hold the people in a narrow place, so hold fast. Zufar fled that day, which was the third day, and reached Qarqīsiyā. That was because he had learned that ʿAbd al-Malik b. Marwān had resolved to move against him at Qarqīsiyā, so he hastened to prepare. It is also said that he claimed that when he fled, as an excuse. Qays fled and Taghlib and those with them rode upon their shoulders, saying: "Do you not know that Taghlib prevails?" Jumayl b. Qays of the Banū Kaʿb b. Zuhayr attacked ʿUmayr and killed him. It is also said: rather, two youths of Banū Taghlib conspired against ʿUmayr and stoned him while he was exhausted, and they disabled him, then Ibn Hawbar turned upon him and killed him. Ibn Hawbar received a wound that day. When the war ended, he instructed Banū Taghlib to entrust their affairs to Murād b. ʿAlqamah al-Zuhayrī. It is also said: Ibn Hawbar went out on the second day of these three days of theirs, and instructed that they entrust their affairs to Murād, and he died that night. Murād was their chief on the third day, and he arrayed them under their banners, and ordered every clan to place their women behind them. When ʿUmayr saw them, he said what was mentioned before. The poet said: I lay awake by the banks of the Euphrates, and mourners moved me, made to weep by the slain Ibn Hawbar. You would not be wrong, O mother of Mughallis, to lament the slain of the Christians among mourning women with disordered hair. Another poet said, denying that Ibn Hawbar killed ʿUmayr: Indeed ʿUmayr, on the day Taghlib met him, is the slain of Jumayl, not the slain of Ibn Hawbar. Killing was heavy that day among Banū Sulaym and Ghanī in particular, and many men of Qays were also killed that day. Banū Taghlib sent the head of ʿUmayr b. al-Ḥubāb to ʿAbd al-Malik b. Marwān in Damascus, and he gave gifts and robes to the delegation. When ʿAbd al-Malik made peace with Zufar b. al-Ḥārith and the people united under him, al-Akhṭal said: Banū Umayyah, sons of a people have contested on your behalf—they gave shelter and they helped. And Qays ʿAylān, until they came dancing, then pledged allegiance to you under compulsion after they were subdued. They cried out from war when their withers were bitten, and Qays ʿAylān have restlessness in their nature. In many verses. When ʿUmayr b. al-Ḥubāb was killed, a man stood before Asmāʾ b. Khārijah al-Fazārī in al-Kūfah and said: "Banū Taghlib killed ʿUmayr b. al-Ḥubāb." He said: "No matter; the man was killed in the territory of the people, advancing, not retreating." Then he said: My hand is pledged against Sulaym for a raid that will make the locks of Bakr b. Wāʾil turn gray, And leave the children of al-Fadawkas destitute, orphans and widows, a prey for the tribes.
