The Year Seventy of the Hijrah

يَوْمُ الشَّرْعَبِيَّةِ ثُمَّ الْتَقَوْا بِالشَّرْعَبِيَّةِ، وَعَلَى قَيْسٍ عُمَيْرُ بْنُ الْحُبَابِ، وَعَلَى تَغْلِبَ وَأَلْفَافِهَا ابْنُ هَوْبَرٍ، فَكَانَ بَيْنَهُمْ قِتَالٌ شَدِيدٌ، قُتِلَ يَوْمَئِذٍ عَمَّارُ بْنُ الْمُهَزَّمِ السُّلَمِيُّ، وَكَانَ لِتَغْلِبَ عَلَى قَيْسٍ، قَالَ الْأَخْطَلُ: وَلَقَدْ بَكَى الْجَحَّافُ لَمَّا أَوْقَعَتْ بِالشَّرْعَبِيَّةِ إِذْ رَأَى الْأَهْوَالَا يَعْنِي أَوْقَعَتِ الْخَيْلُ. وَالشَّرْعَبِيَّةُ: مِنْ بِلَادِ تَغْلِبَ. وَالشَّرْعَبِيَّةُ أَيْضًا: بِبِلَادِ مَنْبِجَ، فَبَعْضُهُمْ يَقُولُ: إِنَّ هَذِهِ الْوَقْعَةَ كَانَتْ بِبِلَادِ مَنْبِجَ، وَذَلِكَ خَطَأٌ.

Translation

✧ The Day of al-Sharʿabiyyah Then they met at al-Sharʿabiyyah, with ʿUmayr b. al-Ḥubāb over Qays, and over Taghlib and its allied groups Ibn Hawbar. There occurred between them fierce fighting. On that day ʿAmmār b. al-Muhazzam al-Sulamī was killed, and Taghlib had the upper hand over Qays. Al-Akhṭal said: Wa-laqad bakā al-Jaḥḥāfu lammā awqaʿat bi-l-Sharʿabiyyati idh raʾā al-ahwālā He means the cavalry inflicted. Al-Sharʿabiyyah is from the lands of Taghlib. Al-Sharʿabiyyah also is in the lands of Manbij, so some of them say that this battle took place in the lands of Manbij, but that is a mistake.
