✧ The killing of ʿUmayr b. al-Ḥubāb b. Jaʿdah al-Sulamī In the year seventy, ʿUmayr b. al-Ḥubāb b. Jaʿdah al-Sulamī was killed. We will mention the cause of the war between Qays and Taghlib until the matter led to the killing of ʿUmayr. The cause of that was that when the affair of Marj Rāhiṭ had ended, and Zufar b. al-Ḥārith al-Kilāʾī went to Qarqīsiyā, as we mentioned, and ʿUmayr pledged allegiance to Marwān b. al-Ḥakam while harboring in his heart what he harbored because of the killing of Qays at Marj, then when Marwān b. al-Ḥakam sent ʿUbayd Allāh b. Ziyād to the Jazīrah and Iraq, ʿUmayr was with him, and they met Sulaymān b. Ṣurad at ʿAyn al-Wardah. ʿUbayd Allāh then marched to Qarqīsiyā to fight Zufar, but ʿUmayr detained him and advised him to march to Mosul before the army of al-Mukhtār arrived there. He marched to it and met Ibrāhīm b. al-Ashtar at al-Khāzir, and ʿUmayr sided with him, so the army of ʿUbayd Allāh was defeated and he was killed. ʿUmayr then went to Qarqīsiyā and joined Zufar, and the two of them sought out Kalb and the Yemenites for what they had done in killing Qays. With them were a group from Taghlib fighting alongside them and guiding them. ʿAbd al-Malik was distracted from them by Muṣʿab, and ʿUmayr seized Naṣībīn. Then he grew weary of staying in Qarqīsiyā, so he sought amnesty from ʿAbd al-Malik, who granted it. Then ʿAbd al-Malik betrayed him and imprisoned him with his client al-Rayyān. ʿUmayr gave wine to al-Rayyān and the guards who were with him until he made them drunk, climbed up on a ladder of ropes, left the prison, returned to the Jazīrah, and encamped on the Balīkh River between Ḥarrān and al-Raqqah. Qays gathered to him, and he used to raid Kalb and the Yemenites with them. Those with him used to take Taghlib slave girls as concubines and force their Christian elders into menial labor, and that stirred up evil among them that did not reach war, and that was before ʿAbd al-Malik's march against Muṣʿab and Zufar. Then ʿUmayr raided Kalb and returned to encamp on the Khābūr. The settlements of Taghlib were between the Khābūr, the Euphrates, and the Tigris. Where ʿUmayr encamped there was a woman of Tamīm married into Taghlib called Umm Duwayl. A boy from the Banū al-Ḥarīsh, companions of ʿUmayr, took a number of her sheep, and she complained to ʿUmayr, but he did not restrain them. They then took the rest, and a group from Taghlib resisted them, and a man of theirs called Mujāshiʿ al-Taghlibī was killed. Duwayl came, and his mother complained to him; he was a horseman of the horsemen of Taghlib. He went among his people, reminding them of what Qays were doing to them and complaining to them about what had been taken of his mother's sheep. A group of them gathered, and they appointed over them Shuʿayth b. Mulayk al-Taghlibī. They raided the Banū al-Ḥarīsh, and with them were a group from Numayr. The Taghlibīs killed among them, and they drove off a small herd of camels belonging to a woman of theirs called Umm al-Haytham. The Qaysīs tried to prevent them but could not, so al-Akhṭal said: If you ask us about al-Ḥarīsh, we have indeed been afflicted with foolish ones from among them and with wickedness, On the morning when al-Ḥarīsh avoided us as if they were dogs that bared their fangs for snarling, And they came with a host aiding Umm Hathīm, but they did not return with a single camel of her herd.
