✧ The Day of al-Jufrah In the year seventy, ʿAbd al-Malik b. Marwān set out intending to attack Muṣʿab. Khālid b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Khālid b. Usayd said to him: If you send me to al-Baṣrah, and follow me with a small force of cavalry, I hope to gain it for you. So ʿAbd al-Malik sent him, and he arrived there secretly among his close followers until he alighted at the house of ʿAmr b. Aṣmaʿ; and it is said: he alighted at the house of ʿAlī b. Aṣmaʿ al-Bāhilī. ʿAmr sent to ʿAbbād b. al-Ḥuṣayn, who was in charge of Ibn Maʿmar's guard, for Muṣʿab had appointed Ibn Maʿmar as his deputy over al-Baṣrah. Ibn Aṣmaʿ hoped that ʿAbbād b. al-Ḥuṣayn would give allegiance to him and said to him: I have granted protection to Khālid, and I would like you to know that so that you may be a support to me. The messenger reached him just as he dismounted from his horse. ʿAbbād said: Tell him: By God, I will not set down my horse's saddle-cloth until I come to you with the cavalry. Ibn Aṣmaʿ said to Khālid: ʿAbbād will come to us within the hour, and I cannot protect you from him, so go to Mālik b. Mismāʿ. Khālid went out at a gallop, having taken his feet out of the stirrups, until he came to Mālik and said: Grant me protection. So he granted him protection and sent to Bakr b. Wāʾil and al-Azd. The first banner that came to him was the banner of Banū Yashkur. ʿAbbād advanced with the cavalry, and they faced each other, but there was no fighting between them. On the morrow they came to the Jufrah of Nāfiʿ b. al-Ḥārith. With Khālid were men from Tamīm, among them Ṣaʿṣaʿah b. Muʿāwiyah, ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. Bishr, Murrah b. Miḥkān, and others. Khālid's followers were Jufriyyah, tracing their name to al-Jufrah, and Ibn Maʿmar's followers were Zubayriyyah. Among Khālid's followers were ʿUbayd Allāh b. Abī Bakrah, Ḥumrān b. Abān, and al-Mughīrah b. al-Muhallab; and among the Zubayriyyah was Qays b. al-Haytham al-Sulamī. Muṣʿab sent Zaḥr b. Qays al-Juʿfī as reinforcement to Ibn Maʿmar with a thousand men, and ʿAbd al-Malik sent ʿUbayd Allāh b. Ziyād b. Ẓabyān as reinforcement to Khālid. ʿUbayd Allāh sent someone to al-Baṣrah to bring him news, and the man returned and told him that the people were divided, so he went back to ʿAbd al-Malik. They fought for twenty-four days. The eye of Mālik b. Mismāʿ was injured, and he grew weary of the war. Envoys went between them, and they made peace on the condition that Khālid should leave al-Baṣrah, so Mālik brought him out. Then Mālik joined Thaʾaj. ʿAbd al-Malik had already returned to Damascus. Muṣʿab had no concern other than al-Baṣrah, and he hoped to catch Khālid there, but he found that he had left. Muṣʿab was angry with Ibn Maʿmar, and he brought Khālid's followers and reviled and insulted them. He said to ʿUbayd Allāh b. Abī Bakrah: O son of Masrūḥ, you are only the son of a bitch that dogs mounted in turn, and she gave birth to a red one, a yellow one, and a black one, from every dog something resembling it. Your father was only a slave who came down to the Messenger of God ﷺ from the fortress of al-Ṭāʾif. Then you claimed that Abū Sufyān committed adultery with your mother. By God, if I remain alive I shall attach you to your lineage. Then he summoned Ḥumrān and said to him: You are only the son of a Jewish woman, a Nabataean boor who was captured at ʿAyn al-Tamr. And he said to al-Ḥakam b. al-Mundhir b. al-Jārūd, and to ʿAbd Allāh b. Faḍālah al-Zahrānī, and to ʿAlī b. Aṣmaʿ, and to ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. Bishr, and to others, similar words of reproach and rebuke, and he had them beaten with a hundred lashes each, shaved their heads and beards, demolished their houses, exposed them to the sun for three days, compelled them to divorce their wives, conscripted their sons into the armies, paraded them through the districts of al-Baṣrah, made them swear that they would not marry free women, and demolished the house of Mālik b. Mismāʿ and took what was in it. Among what he took was a slave girl who bore him ʿAmr b. Muṣʿab. Muṣʿab remained in al-Baṣrah, then departed to al-Kūfah, and he stayed there until he went out to fight ʿAbd al-Malik b. Marwān.
