✧ The killing of Shimr b. Dhī al-Jawshan, commander of the detachment that killed Ḥusayn The nobles of al-Kūfah fled to al-Baṣrah to Muṣʿab b. al-Zubayr. Among those who fled with that intent was Shimr b. Dhī al-Jawshan—may God disfigure him. Al-Mukhtār sent in pursuit of him a servant of his called Zarbī. When he drew near him, Shimr said to his companions: “Go on ahead and leave me behind you, as though you have fled and abandoned me, so that this barbarian may be emboldened against me.” So they rode on, and Shimr fell back. Zarbī caught up with him, and Shimr turned on him, struck his back, and killed him. Shimr went on, leaving him, and wrote a letter to Muṣʿab b. al-Zubayr, who was in al-Baṣrah, warning him of his coming to him and of his delegation to him. Everyone who fled from that battle fled to Muṣʿab in al-Baṣrah. Shimr sent the letter with a barbarian from the barbarians of a village where he had halted, called al-Kaltāniyyah, by a river beside a mound there. That barbarian went off, and another barbarian met him and said to him: “Where are you going?” He said: “To Muṣʿab.” He said: “From whom?” He said: “From Shimr.” He said: “Come with me to my master.” His master was Abū ʿAmrah, commander of al-Mukhtār's guard, and he had ridden out in search of Shimr. The barbarian led him to his location, and Abū ʿAmrah made for him. Shimr's companions had advised him to move from that place, but he said to them: “This is all fear of the liar. By God, I will not depart from here for three days, until I fill their hearts with terror.” When night came, Abū ʿAmrah fell upon them with the cavalry and caught them before they could mount or put on their weapons. Shimr b. Dhī al-Jawshan rose against them and fought them with his spear while he was naked. Then he entered his tent and brought out a sword, saying: You have roused a fierce lion of the thicket, grim-faced, who breaks the shoulder, never seen one day turning back from an enemy, except thus, fighting or killing, harrying them with blows and watering the spearhead. He kept defending himself until he was killed. When his companions, who were in flight, heard the sound of the takbīr and the words of al-Mukhtār's men: “God is greatest! The vile one is killed!” they knew that he had been killed—may God disfigure him. Abū Mikhnaf said, from Yūnus b. Abī Isḥāq, who said: When al-Mukhtār went out from Jabbānat al-Sabīʿ and approached the palace—meaning on his return from the battle—Surāqah b. Mirdās called to him at the top of his voice, while he was among the captives: Bestow favor on me today, O best of Maʿadd, and best of those who halted at Shiḥr and al-Janad, and best of those who said labbayka, fasted, and prostrated. He said: So he sent him to the prison and detained him for one night, then released him the next day. He came to al-Mukhtār, saying: Inform Abū Isḥāq that we leapt a leap that was against us. We went out not considering the weak as anything, and our going out was insolence and ruin. We saw them in their ranks as few, but they were like locusts when we met. We advanced when we saw them, and when we saw the people had advanced against us, we saw from them striking and grinding and unerring thrusting until we turned back. You were aided against your enemy every day by every squadron that laments Ḥusayn, like the aid of Muḥammad on the day of Badr and the day of the mountain pass when he met Ḥunayn. So be generous now that you have prevailed, for if we had prevailed, we would have been tyrannical in judgment and transgressed. Accept repentance from me, for I will be grateful if you make the present a debt. Surāqah b. Mirdās began to swear that he had seen the angels fighting on dappled horses between heaven and earth, and that none but one of those angels had captured him. Al-Mukhtār ordered him to climb the pulpit and tell the people that. He climbed the pulpit and told the people that. When he came down, al-Mukhtār was alone with him and said to him: “I know that you did not see the angels. By this speech of yours you only wanted me not to kill you. I will not kill you, so go wherever you wish, only do not corrupt my companions against me.” Surāqah went to al-Baṣrah to Muṣʿab b. al-Zubayr and began to say: Inform Abū Isḥāq that I saw the dappled horses as dark and solid. I disbelieve in your revelation, and I have made a vow upon myself to fight you until death. My two eyes saw what yours did not see; both of us know the falsehoods. When they speak, I say to them: “You have lied,” and if they go out, I put on my gear for them. Al-Mukhtār b. Abī ʿUbayd al-Thaqafī's sermon inciting the pursuit of those who killed Ḥusayn among the people of al-Kūfah who remained there They said: Then al-Mukhtār addressed his companions and incited them in that sermon to pursue those who had killed Ḥusayn among the people of al-Kūfah who remained there. He said: “It is not our religion to leave a people who killed Ḥusayn walking in the world alive and secure. Wretched is the helper of the family of Muḥammad! Then I would indeed be a liar, as you have called me. I seek God's help against them. Praise be to God who made me a sword to strike them, a spear to thrust them, a seeker of their vengeance, and the one who upholds their right. It was incumbent upon God to kill those who killed them and to abase those who were ignorant of their right. So name them, then pursue them until you kill them. Food and drink are not lawful for me until I purify the earth of them and expel those of them who are in the city.” Then he set about pursuing those of them who were in al-Kūfah. They would be brought to him until they were made to stand before him, and he would order their killing with various kinds of slaughter appropriate to what they had done. Some of them he burned with fire, some he had their limbs cut off and left until they died, and some were shot with arrows until they died. They brought him Mālik b. Bashīr, and al-Mukhtār said to him: “Are you the one who stripped the burnoose from Ḥusayn?” He said: “We went out unwillingly, so bestow favor on us.” He said: “Cut off his hands and his feet.” They did that to him, then left him writhing until he died. He killed ʿAbd Allāh b. Usayd al-Juhanī and others with the worst of killings. That day ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Saʿīd b. Qays al-Hamdānī was killed. His killing was claimed by Siʿr b. Abī Siʿr, Abū al-Zubayr al-Shibāmī—Shibām being of Hamdān—and another man. Ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān said to Abū al-Zubayr al-Shibāmī: “Do you kill my father ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, the chief of your people?” He recited: “You will not find a people who believe in God and the Last Day loving those who oppose God and His Messenger,” to the end of the verse. The battle ended with seven hundred and eighty killed of his people, and most of the killing that day was among the people of Yemen. He ordered Ziyād b. Mālik al-Ḍubaʿī, ʿImrān b. Khālid al-Qushayrī, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Abī Khishkārah al-Bajalī, and ʿAbd Allāh b. Qays al-Khawlānī to be brought before him. When he saw them he said: “O killers of the righteous, and killers of the chief of the youths of the people of Paradise! God has exacted retribution from you today. The wars has come to you on an ill-omened day.” They had plundered the wars that was with Ḥusayn. Then he ordered them and they were killed. Brought before him were ʿAbd Allāh and ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, the two sons of Ṣalkhat, and ʿAbd Allāh b. Wahb b. ʿAmr al-Hamdānī, who was the cousin of Aʿshā Hamdān. He ordered their killing, and they were killed. Brought before him were ʿUthmān b. Khālid b. Usayd al-Duhmānī al-Juhanī and Abū Asmāʾ Bishr b. Shumayṭ al-Qāniṣī. The two of them had shared in the killing of ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAqīl and in plundering him. He struck off their heads, and they were burned with fire.
