✧ The killing by al-Mukhtār of the murderers of al-Ḥusayn ﷺ Then al-Mukhtār began to track down the murderers of al-Ḥusayn, both noble and lowly, and put them to death. The reason for that was that ʿUbayd Allāh b. Ziyād had been dispatched by Marwān b. al-Ḥakam from Damascus to enter al-Kūfah, and if he gained control of it he was to make it lawful [for his troops] for three days, and he assigned to him whatever lands he conquered. So Ibn Ziyād set out heading for al-Kūfah and met the army of the Penitents at ʿAyn al-Wardah — as we have mentioned — then he marched until he reached al-Jazīrah, where he found Qays ʿAylān, who were among the supporters of Ibn al-Zubayr. Marwān had killed many of them on the day of Marj Rāhiṭ, and they were united against him and against his son ʿAbd al-Malik after him. So he was delayed for a year, besieging Qays ʿAylān in al-Jazīrah. Then Marwān died and his son ʿAbd al-Malik b. Marwān succeeded him, and he confirmed Ibn Ziyād in what his father had appointed him to, and ordered him to proceed vigorously in his task. When he could not gain anything against Zufar and those Qays who were with him, he turned to al-Mawṣil. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Saʿīd, al-Mukhtār's governor, wrote to al-Mukhtār informing him of Ibn Ziyād's entry into the land of al-Mawṣil and that he had withdrawn from al-Mawṣil to Takrīt. So al-Mukhtār summoned Yazīd b. Anas al-Asadī and ordered him to march to al-Mawṣil and encamp at the nearest part of its territory until he sent him reinforcements. Yazīd said to him: "Let me choose three thousand cavalry, and leave me to the matter you are sending me for. If I need [help], I shall write to you asking for reinforcements." Al-Mukhtār agreed, so he chose three thousand and set out from al-Kūfah. Al-Mukhtār and the people went out with him to see him off. When he bade him farewell, he said to him: "When you meet your enemy, do not give them time. When opportunity comes, do not delay it. Let me have news of you every day, and if you need reinforcements, write to me. Even so, I shall send you reinforcements even if you do not ask for them, for that is a greater support for you and a greater terror for your enemy." The people prayed for his safety, and they prayed for him. He said to them: "Ask God to grant me martyrdom, for by God, if victory escapes me, martyrdom will not." Al-Mukhtār wrote to ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Saʿīd: "Leave the way open between Yazīd and the lands." So Yazīd marched to al-Madāʾin, then to the land of Jūkhā and al-Rādhānāt, to the land of al-Mawṣil, and encamped at Bātilā. When news of their departure from al-Kūfah reached ʿUbayd Allāh b. Ziyād, he dispatched two squadrons ahead of him: one with Rabīʿah b. Mukhāriq, three thousand strong, and the other with ʿAbd Allāh b. Ḥamlah, three thousand strong, and he said: "Whichever of you arrives first is the commander, and if you arrive together, the commander over the people is the older of you two." Rabīʿah b. Mukhāriq hastened ahead and reached Yazīd b. Anas, and they met at the edge of the land of al-Mawṣil on the side toward al-Kūfah. They stood facing each other there, while Yazīd b. Anas was sick and gravely ill, yet he continued to urge his people to fight and went around the quarters, carried despite his weakness, riding on a donkey, saying to his people: "O troops of God, be patient and you will be rewarded; fight your enemy and you will prevail." Then he dismounted and his bed was placed for him between the two lines, and he said to his people: "Fight for your commander if you will, or flee from him." And he said to the people: "If I perish, the commander over the people is ʿAbd Allāh b. Ḍamrah al-ʿUdhrī, head of the right wing; if he perishes, then Suʿr b. Abī Suʿr, head of the left wing." Warqāʾ b. ʿĀzib al-Asadī was over the cavalry, and he and those three were the commanders of the quarters. That was on the day of ʿArafah in the year sixty-six, at the first light of dawn. They fought the Syrians a fierce battle, and the two right wings and the two left wings wavered. Then Warqāʾ charged with the cavalry and routed them, and the Syrians fled. Their commander Rabīʿah b. Mukhāriq was killed, and al-Mukhtār's army seized what was in their camp. Their fugitives returned and met the other commander, ʿAbd Allāh b. Ḥamlah, who asked: "What is your news?" They told him, so he turned back with them and marched them toward Yazīd b. Anas, reaching them at nightfall. The people spent the night separated from each other. When morning came, they stood facing each other in their battle lines, and that was the Day of Sacrifice in the year sixty-six. They fought a fierce battle, and al-Mukhtār's army again defeated the Syrians, killed their commander ʿAbd Allāh b. Ḥamlah, seized what was in their camp, and took three hundred prisoners. They brought them to Yazīd b. Anas while he was at his last breath, and he ordered their necks to be struck. Yazīd b. Anas died that same day, and his successor Warqāʾ b. ʿĀmir prayed over him and buried him. His companions became dismayed and began to slip away, returning to al-Kūfah. Warqāʾ said to them: "O people, what do you think? It has reached me that Ibn Ziyād has advanced with eighty thousand men from Syria, and I do not think you have the strength to face them. Our commander has died, and a group of our army, our companions, has scattered from us. If we were to turn back to our lands, showing that we are only departing out of grief for our commander, that would be better for us than meeting them and being defeated, returning as vanquished men." The commanders agreed on that, so they returned to al-Kūfah. When their news reached the people of al-Kūfah — that they had turned back — and they learned that Yazīd b. Anas had died, the people of al-Kūfah spread rumors against al-Mukhtār, saying: "Yazīd b. Anas was killed in the battle and his army was defeated. Soon Ibn Ziyād will come upon you and exterminate you and drain your greenness." The revolt against al-Mukhtār b. Abī ʿUbayd al-Thaqafī Then they conspired to rise against al-Mukhtār and said: "He is a liar." They agreed to wage war against him, fight him, and expel him from among them. They said: "He is a liar who has put our clients ahead of our nobles, and he claims that Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥanafiyyah ordered him to seek revenge for al-Ḥusayn, but he never ordered him to do anything; he is only forging lies against him." They waited to rise against him until Ibrāhīm b. al-Ashtar had left al-Kūfah, for al-Mukhtār had assigned him to go out with seven thousand to meet Ibn Ziyād. When Ibrāhīm b. al-Ashtar departed, the nobles of al-Kūfah gathered at the house of Shabath b. Ribʿī and said: "By God, al-Mukhtār has taken command over us without our consent. He has brought our clients close, mounted them on beasts, and given them our share of the revenues." Shabath was their elder, a man of both the Jāhiliyyah and Islam. Shabath said to them: "Let me go and meet him." So he went to him and did not leave out anything they objected to without mentioning it to him. Each point he raised, al-Mukhtār said: "I will satisfy them on this point and give them everything they wish." He mentioned the clients and their sharing in the revenues, and al-Mukhtār said to him: "If I leave your clients alone and give your revenues to you, will you fight with me against the Umayyads and Ibn al-Zubayr, and give me the covenant of God and His pledge, and such oaths as I can rely on?" Shabath said: "Let me go out to my companions and mention that to them." He went out to them, but did not return to him. Their opinion settled on fighting him. So Shabath b. Ribʿī, Muḥammad b. al-Ashʿath, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Saʿīd b. Qays, and Shimr gathered and went in to Kaʿb b. Abī Kaʿb al-Khathʿamī and spoke to him about that. He agreed with them. Then they left him and went in to ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Mikhnaf al-Azdī and called him to that. He said to them: "If you obey me, you will not go out." They said: "Why?" He said: "Because I fear you will scatter and disagree. With the man are your brave men and horsemen, such as so-and-so and so-and-so. Moreover, with him are your slaves and your clients, and the word of those people is one. Your clients are more angry at you than your enemy, and they will fight you with the courage of the Arabs and the hatred of the non-Arabs. If you wait a little, you will be spared from him by the arrival of the Syrians or the coming of the people of al-Baṣrah. Then you will have been spared by others and will not have turned your strength against each other." They said: "We adjure you by God not to oppose us and spoil our plan and what we have agreed upon!" He said: "I am only a man among you; if you wish, go out." Then they leapt up, and each tribe rode with its commander to a district of al-Kūfah and headed for the governor's palace. Al-Mukhtār sent ʿAmr b. Tawbah as a courier to Ibrāhīm b. al-Ashtar to return to him quickly, and he sent to those people saying: "What do you resent? I will agree to all that you demand." He only wanted to delay them from attacking him until Ibrāhīm b. al-Ashtar arrived. He said: "If you do not believe me concerning the matter of Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥanafiyyah, then send someone from your side, and I will send someone from mine, to ask him about it." He ordered his companions to hold back their hands. The people of al-Kūfah had seized the entrances of the streets, so nothing reached them except a little. ʿAbd Allāh b. Sabīʿ went out into the open space and the Banū Shākir fought him fiercely. ʿUqbah b. Ṭāriq al-Jushamī came to him and fought alongside him for a while until he drove them back from him. Then he came and encamped with Shimr, and with him were Qays ʿAylān in the cemetery of Salūl. ʿAbd Allāh b. Sabīʿ encamped with the people of Yemen in the cemetery of al-Sabīʿ. When al-Mukhtār's messenger reached Ibn al-Ashtar that evening, Ibn al-Ashtar returned the rest of that evening, then dismounted when night fell. His companions supped and rested their mounts a little, then he marched all that night and the next day, arriving at the time of the afternoon prayer. He spent that night in the mosque, and with him were the strong men of his companions. When the people of Yemen gathered at the cemetery of al-Sabīʿ and the time for prayer came, each head of the Yemenis disliked that his companion should go before him. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Mikhnaf said to them: "This is the first sign of disagreement. Put forward the one among you who is acceptable, the master of the reciters, Rifāʿah b. Shaddād al-Bajalī." They did so, and he led them in prayer until the battle took place. Then al-Mukhtār drew up his companions in the market, where there were no buildings. He ordered Ibn al-Ashtar to march against Muḍar, who were led by Shabath b. Ribʿī and Muḥammad b. ʿUmayr b. ʿUṭārid, and they were at al-Kunāsah. He feared that if he sent him against the people of Yemen, he would not fight his own people earnestly. Al-Mukhtār himself marched toward the people of Yemen at the cemetery of al-Sabīʿ and halted at the house of ʿAmr b. Saʿīd. He sent ahead of him Aḥmar b. Shumayṭ al-Bajalī and ʿAbd Allāh b. Kāmil al-Shākirī, and he ordered each of them to keep to a road that he described for him, leading out to the cemetery of al-Sabīʿ. He secretly told them that Shibām had sent word to him informing him that they would come upon the people from behind. So they went as he had ordered them. When the people of Yemen learned of their march, they divided to meet the two of them, and they fought the fiercest battle the people had ever seen. Then the companions of Aḥmar b. Shumayṭ and the companions of Ibn Kāmil were defeated and came to al-Mukhtār. He said: "What is behind you?" They said: "We have been defeated, and Aḥmar b. Shumayṭ has dismounted with some of his companions." The companions of Ibn Kāmil said: "We do not know what Ibn Kāmil has done." Al-Mukhtār advanced with them toward the people until he reached the house of Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Jadalī and halted. Then he sent ʿAbd Allāh b. Qurād al-Khathʿamī with four hundred men to Ibn Kāmil and said to him: "If he has perished, then take his place and fight the people. If he is alive, leave three hundred of your companions with him and go on with one hundred until you reach the cemetery of al-Sabīʿ, and come upon its people from the direction of the bath of Qaṭan." He went and found Ibn Kāmil fighting them with a group of his companions who had stood firm with him. He left three hundred men with him and marched with one hundred until he came to the mosque of ʿAbd al-Qays. He said to his companions: "I would like al-Mukhtār to prevail, but I hate that the nobles of my tribe should perish today. By God, for me to die is dearer to me than that they should perish at my hands. But halt, for I have heard that Shibām are coming upon them from behind. Perhaps they will do so, and we will be spared from it." So he halted at the mosque of ʿAbd al-Qays. Al-Mukhtār sent Mālik b. ʿAmr al-Nahdī, who was a brave man, and ʿAbd Allāh b. Sharīk al-Nahdī with four hundred men to Aḥmar b. Shumayṭ. They reached him while the people had surrounded him and outnumbered him, and the fighting intensified at that point. As for Ibn al-Ashtar, he went against Muḍar and met Shabath b. Ribʿī and those with him. Ibrāhīm said to them: "Woe to you, turn back, for I do not like any of Muḍar to be struck down at my hands." They refused and fought him, and he defeated them. Ḥassān b. Fāʾid al-ʿAbsī was wounded and carried to his family, where he died. He had been with Shabath. The news of the defeat of Muḍar reached al-Mukhtār, and he sent word to Aḥmar b. Shumayṭ and Ibn Kāmil, giving them the good news, and their resolve strengthened. Shibām gathered, having made Abū al-Qalūṣ their leader, to come upon the people of Yemen from behind. Some of them said to one another: "If you directed your effort against Muḍar and Rabīʿah, that would be more fitting." Abū al-Qalūṣ remained silent. They said: "What do you say?" He said: "God, exalted is He, has said: 'Fight those of the disbelievers who are near you.'" So they marched with him toward the people of Yemen. When they came out to the cemetery of al-Sabīʿ, al-Aʿsar al-Shākirī met them at the mouth of the street, and they killed him. They called out in the cemetery, having entered it: "Revenge for al-Ḥusayn!" Yazīd b. ʿUmayr b. Dhī Murrān al-Hamdānī heard it and said: "Revenge for ʿUthmān!" Rifāʿah b. Shaddād said to them: "What have we to do with ʿUthmān? I will not fight with a people who seek the blood of ʿUthmān." Some of his people said to him: "You brought us and we obeyed you, until when we saw our people being struck by swords, you said: 'Turn back and leave them!'" So he turned on them, saying in verse: I am the son of Shaddād, upon the religion of ʿAlī; I am no friend of ʿUthmān b. Arwā. Today I shall surely burn among those who burn in the heat of war's fire, without holding back. He fought until he was killed. Rifāʿah had been with al-Mukhtār, but when he saw his falsehood, he wanted to kill him by treachery. He said: "The saying of the Prophet ﷺ prevented me: 'Whoever a man entrusts with his blood and he kills him, I am innocent of him.'" On that day, he fought alongside the people of Kufa. But when he heard Yazīd b. ʿUmayr saying, “Vengeance for ʿUthmān!” he turned away from them and fought alongside al-Mukhtār until he was killed. Yazīd b. ʿUmayr b. Dhī Murrān was killed, as was al-Nuʿmān b. Ṣahbān al-Jarmī, who was a devout worshipper. Al-Furāt b. Zaḥr b. Qays was killed, and his father Zaḥr was wounded. ʿAbd Allāh b. Saʿīd b. Qays was killed, and ʿUmar b. Mikhnaf was killed. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Mikhnaf fought until he was wounded, and the men carried him on their hands while he was unaware. Men from the Azd fought around him. The people of Yemen fled in an ugly rout. He took five hundred prisoners from the houses of the Wādiʿīs and brought them to al-Mukhtār bound. Al-Mukhtār ordered them to be brought before him and presented. He said, “Look for those among them who witnessed the killing of al-Ḥusayn and inform me.” He killed everyone who had witnessed the killing of al-Ḥusayn, killing two hundred and forty-eight of them. His companions went on killing everyone who had done them harm. When al-Mukhtār heard of that, he ordered the release of all the remaining prisoners and took from them covenants that they would not join an enemy against him, nor seek to do harm to him or his companions. A herald of al-Mukhtār proclaimed: “Whoever closes his door is safe, except for those who shared in shedding the blood of the family of Muḥammad ﷺ.” ʿAmr b. al-Ḥajjāj al-Zubaydī was among those who had witnessed the killing of al-Ḥusayn. He mounted his riding camel and took the road of Wāqiṣa, and no news of him has been seen to this hour. It is said: the companions of al-Mukhtār caught up with him after he had fallen from severe thirst, and they slaughtered him and took his head. When al-Furāt b. Zaḥr b. Qays was killed, ʿĀʾisha bt. Khalīfa b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Juʿfiyya—who was the wife of al-Ḥusayn—sent to al-Mukhtār asking him to permit her to bury him. He did so, and she buried him.
