✧ The killing of Khawlī b. Yazīd al-Aṣbaḥī, who severed the head of al-Ḥusayn Al-Mukhtār sent to him Abū ʿAmrah, the commander of his guard, who raided his house. His wife came out to them; they asked her about him, and she said: I do not know where he is. And she pointed with her hand to the place where he was hiding. She hated him from the night he brought the head of al-Ḥusayn with him to her, and she used to reproach him for that. Her name was al-ʿAyūf bt. Mālik b. Nahār b. ʿAqrab al-Ḥaḍramī. They entered upon him and found that he had placed a basket over his head. They carried him to al-Mukhtār, who ordered that he be killed near his house and then burned. Al-Mukhtār sent to Ḥakīm b. Fuḍayl al-Sinbisī—who had plundered al-ʿAbbās b. ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib on the day al-Ḥusayn was killed, and had shot an arrow at al-Ḥusayn, and used to say: My arrow caught his tunic, and it did not harm him. The companions of al-Mukhtār came to him and seized him. His family went and interceded through ʿAdī b. Ḥātim, and ʿAdī spoke to them about him. They said: That is up to al-Mukhtār. So ʿAdī went to al-Mukhtār to intercede for him. Al-Mukhtār had already granted his intercession for a group of his people captured on the day of Jabbānat al-Sabīʿ. The Shīʿah said: We fear that al-Mukhtār will grant his intercession for him, so they killed him by shooting arrows, just as he had shot at al-Ḥusayn, until he became like a hedgehog. ʿAdī b. Ḥātim entered upon al-Mukhtār, who seated him with him, and ʿAdī interceded for him. Al-Mukhtār said: Do you deem it lawful to seek intercession for one of the killers of al-Ḥusayn? ʿAdī said: It is falsely attributed to him. He said: Then we shall leave him to you. Then Ibn Kāmil entered and informed al-Mukhtār of his killing. He said: Why were you so hasty in that? Could you not have brought him before me? Yet he was pleased by his killing. Ibn Kāmil said: The Shīʿah prevailed over me regarding him. ʿAdī said to Ibn Kāmil: You lie! Rather you thought that one better than you would intercede with me, so you killed him. Ibn Kāmil insulted him, and al-Mukhtār forbade him from that. Al-Mukhtār sent to the killer of ʿAlī b. al-Ḥusayn, who was Murrah b. Munqidh of ʿAbd al-Qays; he was brave. They surrounded his house. He came out to them on his horse with his spear in his hand and fought them with his spear. He was struck on his hand, and he fled from them and escaped, and joined Muṣʿab b. al-Zubayr. His hand became paralyzed after that. Al-Mukhtār sent to Zayd b. Ruqād al-Junaybī, who used to say: I shot a youth among them with an arrow while his palm was on his forehead, warding off the arrows, and I fixed his palm to his forehead, so that he could not remove his palm from his forehead—and that youth was ʿAbd Allāh b. Muslim b. ʿAqīl—and he said when I shot him: O God, they have despised us and humiliated us, so kill them as they killed us. Then he shot the boy with another arrow. And he used to say: I came to him when he was dead, and I pulled out my arrow with which I had killed him from his belly, and I kept tugging it from his forehead until I took it, and the arrowhead remained. When the companions of al-Mukhtār came to him, he came out to them with a sword. Ibn Kāmil said to them: Do not thrust him with spears or strike him with the sword; shoot him with arrows and stones. They did that to him, and he fell, and they burned him alive. Al-Mukhtār sought Sinān b. Anas, who used to claim the killing of al-Ḥusayn, but he found that he had fled to al-Baṣrah, so he demolished his house. He sought ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUqbah al-Ghanawī, and found that he had fled to al-Jazīrah, so he demolished his house. He had killed a boy from among them. He sought another from Banū Asad called Ḥarmalah b. al-Kāhin, who had killed a man of the people of al-Ḥusayn, but he escaped him. He also sought a man from Khathʿam named ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUrwah al-Khathʿamī, who used to say: I shot twelve arrows among them. He escaped him and joined Muṣʿab b. al-Zubayr, so he demolished his house. He also sought ʿAmr b. al-Ṣubayḥ al-Ṣudāʾī, who used to say: I thrust among them and wounded, but I did not kill any of them. He was brought by night and seized, and was brought before al-Mukhtār, who ordered the spears to be brought, and he was thrust with them until he died. He sent to Muḥammad b. al-Ashʿab, who was in a village of his beside al-Qādisiyyah. They sought him but did not find him; he had fled to Muṣʿab. So al-Mukhtār demolished his house and built with its bricks and clay the house of Ḥujr b. ʿAdī al-Kindī, which Ziyād had demolished.
