The Year 64 AH

Translation

✧ And in the year sixty-four the sweeping plague occurred in Basra. The mother of Ibn Maʿmar the governor died, and they found no one to carry her until they hired four people for her. The occurrence of this plague was four days: on the first day seventy thousand died, on the second day seventy-one thousand, on the third day seventy-three thousand, and on the fourth day the people woke up dead [except for a few] individuals. From a man nicknamed Abū al-Nufayd, who had lived through the time of the plague, he said: We used to go around the tribes and bury the dead, and when they became numerous we were unable to bury them, so we would enter a house whose people had died and block its door. He said: We entered a house and searched it and found no one alive in it, so we blocked its door. When the plagues had passed, we would go around the tribes removing those blockings that we had made. We removed the blocking of that door that we had entered and searched the house and found no one alive, and behold, there was a boy in the middle of the house, fresh and anointed, as if he had just been taken from his mother's lap. He said: While we were standing over the boy, amazed at him, a bitch entered through a crack in the wall and took refuge with the boy, and the boy crawled to her until he sucked from her milk. Maʿdī said: I saw this boy in the mosque of Basra, and he had taken hold of his beard. It was said: This plague was in the year sixty-nine. And it was said: It was in the year sixty-five.
