Translation

✧ The governorship of ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Ḥārith over al-Baṣrah When Qays and al-Nuʿmān agreed, and Qays was satisfied with whomever al-Nuʿmān appointed, al-Nuʿmān called witnesses to that and took covenants of consent from Qays and the people. Then he came to ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Aswad, took him by the hand, and imposed conditions on him (until the people thought he had pledged allegiance to him; then he left him and took the hand of ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Ḥārith b. Nawfal b. al-Ḥārith b. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib, nicknamed Babbah, and imposed conditions on him) likewise. Then he praised and extolled God, mentioned the Prophet ﷺ, the right of his family and his kin, and said: “O people, what do you resent in a man from the cousins of your Prophet, whose mother is Hind bt. Abī Sufyān? The matter was among them, so he is the son of your sister.” Then he took him by the hand and said: “I have accepted him for you.” They called to him: “We accept,” and pledged allegiance to him. They brought him to the seat of government until he alighted there. That was at the beginning of Jumādā al-Ākhirah in the year 64. Al-Farazdaq said concerning his pledge: I pledged allegiance to peoples and fulfilled their covenant, while Babbah has pledged allegiance to you, not regretful.
