✧ The emirate of ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Zubayr ؓ When Yazīd perished, the news reached ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Zubayr in Makkah. His affair became strong in the Hijaz and its environs, and the people gave him a general pledge of allegiance there after Yazīd. He appointed his brother ʿUbaydah b. al-Zubayr as his deputy over Madinah, and ordered him to expel the Umayyads from Madinah. He expelled them, and they departed to Syria, among them Marwān and his son ʿAbd al-Malik. Then the people of Basra sent to Ibn al-Zubayr after wars that occurred among them and many tribulations whose full investigation would be lengthy, except that in less than six months they set up over themselves about four commanders from among themselves, then their affairs became disordered, then they sent to Ibn al-Zubayr, while he was in Makkah, summoning him to come to them. He wrote to Anas b. Mālik to lead them in prayer. Ibn al-Zubayr sent to the people of Kufa ʿAbd Allāh b. Yazīd al-Anṣārī over the prayer, and Ibrāhīm b. Muḥammad b. Ṭalḥah b. ʿUbayd Allāh over the land tax. Both of the two garrisons became firmly secured for him, and he sent to the people of Egypt and they pledged allegiance to him. He appointed ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Jaḥdam as his deputy over it, and the Jazirah obeyed him. He sent al-Ḥārith b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī Rabīʿah over Basra, and he sent to Yemen and they pledged allegiance to him, and to Khurasan and they pledged allegiance to him, and to al-Ḍaḥḥāk b. Qays in Syria and he pledged allegiance. It was said: The people of Damascus and its districts from the land of Jordan did not pledge allegiance to him; because they pledged allegiance to Marwān b. al-Ḥakam when al-Ḥuṣayn b. Numayr returned from Makkah to Syria.
