✧ The appointment of Salm b. Ziyād over Khurasan and Sijistan Among the events that occurred in this year—I mean the year sixty-one—after the killing of al-Ḥusayn, in it Yazīd b. Muʿāwiyah appointed Salm b. Ziyād over Sijistan and Khurasan when he came to him as a delegate, his age being twenty-four years, and he dismissed from them his two brothers ʿAbbād and ʿAbd al-Raḥmān. Salm set out to his post and began selecting notables and horsemen and urging the people to jihād. Then he went out in a great army to raid the lands of the Turks, accompanied by his wife Umm Muḥammad bt. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUthmān b. Abī al-ʿĀṣ. She was the first Arab woman to be taken across the river, and she gave birth there to a child they named Ṣughdī. The wife of the ruler of al-Ṣughd sent her a crown of gold and pearls. Before that, the Muslims had not wintered in those lands, but Salm b. Ziyād wintered there. He sent al-Muhallab b. Abī Ṣufrah to that city which belongs to the Turks, namely Khwārizm, and he besieged them until they made peace with him for more than twenty million. He used to take goods from them in compensation, taking a thing at half its value, so the value of what he took from them reached fifty million. Thus al-Muhallab gained favor with Salm b. Ziyād. Then he sent what he had selected from that to Yazīd b. Muʿāwiyah with a marzbān, accompanied by a delegation. Salm made peace with the people of Samarqand in this campaign for a vast sum. He dispatched an army to Khujandah, among whom was Aʿshā Hamdān, and they were defeated. Al-Aʿshā said: Would that my horses on the day of Khujandah had not been defeated and had been left plundered in the place of attack. The birds attend my place of falling, and I go to God stained with blood.
