Translation

✧ The killing of Abū Bilāl Mirdās b. Ḥudayr al-Ḥanẓalī The reason for his rising and ʿUbayd Allāh b. Ziyād's dispatch of the troops against him in two thousand men and their meeting at Āsak and the defeat of Ibn Ziyād's army has already been mentioned. When Abū Bilāl defeated them and that reached Ibn Ziyād, he sent against him three thousand men under ʿAbbād b. al-Akhḍar—al-Akhḍar was the husband of his mother, and he was named after him; he is ʿAbbād b. ʿAlqama b. ʿAbbād al-Tamīmī—and he pursued him until he caught up with him at Tawwaj. ʿAbbād drew up his ranks against him, and Abū Bilāl charged them with those who were with him, but they stood firm and the fighting intensified until the time of ʿaṣr entered. Abū Bilāl said: "This is a Friday, a great day, and this is the time of ʿaṣr, so let us pray." Ibn al-Akhḍar answered them and they drew apart. Ibn al-Akhḍar hastened the prayer—and it is said he cut it short—while the Khārijites were still praying. He and his companions charged them while they were standing, bowing, and prostrating, and not one of them changed his state, so they were killed to the last man, and the head of Abū Bilāl was taken. ʿAbbād returned to al-Baṣra, and ʿUbayd b. Hilāl lay in wait for him there with three men. ʿAbbād came wanting the emirate's palace, carrying a young son of his behind him. They said to him: "Stop so that we may seek your ruling." He stopped, and they said: "We are four brothers whose brother has been killed; what do you think?" He said: "Seek redress from the emir." They said: "We sought redress from him, but he did not give us redress." He said: "Then kill him; may God kill him!" So they sprang upon him and set upon him, and he threw down his son, who escaped, while he himself was killed. The people gathered against the Khārijites and killed them except ʿUbayda. When Ibn ʿAbbād was killed, Ibn Ziyād was in al-Kūfa and his deputy in al-Baṣra was ʿUbayd Allāh b. Abī Bakra. He wrote to him ordering him to pursue the Khārijites, and he did so and began seizing them. If someone interceded for one of them, he guaranteed him until Ibn Ziyād arrived; and whoever no one guaranteed, he imprisoned. ʿUrwa b. Udayya was brought to him, and he released him and said: "I am your guarantor." When Ibn Ziyād arrived, he took those Khārijites who were in prison and killed them, and he demanded the guarantors for those they had guaranteed. Whoever brought a Khārijite was released, and the Khārijite was killed; and whoever did not bring the Khārijite, he killed him. Then he demanded ʿUbayd Allāh b. Abī Bakra for ʿUrwa b. Udayya. He said: "I cannot find him." He said: "Then I will kill you for him." He did not cease searching for him until he captured him and brought him before Ibn Ziyād. Ibn Ziyād said to him: "I will make an example of you." He said: "Choose for yourself whatever retaliation you wish." So he ordered him, and his hands and feet were cut off, and he crucified him. It is said that he was killed in the year fifty-eight.
