✧ The dismissal of al-Walīd from Madinah and the governorship of ʿAmr b. Saʿīd In this year sixty AH al-Walīd b. ʿUtbah was dismissed from Madinah; Yazīd dismissed him and appointed over it ʿAmr b. Saʿīd al-Ashdaq. He arrived there in Ramaḍān, and the people of Madinah entered upon him. He was of great age. He appointed over his shurṭah ʿAmr b. al-Zubayr because of the hatred that existed between him and his brother ʿAbd Allāh. He sent for a number of the people of Madinah and had them flogged severely because of their inclination toward his brother ʿAbd Allāh. Among them were his brother al-Mundhir b. al-Zubayr, his son Muḥammad b. al-Mundhir, ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. al-Aswad b. ʿAbd Yaghūth, ʿUthmān b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Ḥakīm b. Ḥizām, and Muḥammad b. ʿAmmār b. Yāsir, and others. He had them flogged from forty to fifty to sixty lashes. ʿAmr b. Saʿīd consulted ʿAmr b. al-Zubayr about whom he should send against his brother. He said: Do not send against him a man more harmful to him than me. So he equipped the people with him, among them Unays b. ʿAmr al-Aslamī with seven hundred. Marwān b. al-Ḥakam came to ʿAmr b. Saʿīd and said to him: Do not raid Makkah; fear God and do not violate the sanctity of the House. Leave Ibn al-Zubayr alone, for he has grown old and is sixty years old, and he is obstinate. ʿAmr b. al-Zubayr said: By God, we shall raid him in the heart of the Kaʿbah in spite of the nose of whoever is humiliated. Abū Shurayḥ al-Khuzāʿī came to ʿAmr and said to him: Do not raid Makkah, for I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: Fighting was permitted to me in it only for an hour of a day, then it returned to its sanctity as it was yesterday. ʿAmr said to him: We know its sanctity better than you, old man. So Unays marched in his vanguard. It was said: Yazīd wrote to ʿAmr b. Saʿīd to send ʿAmr b. al-Zubayr against his brother ʿAbd Allāh, and he did so. He sent him with an army of about two thousand men. Unays encamped at Dhū Ṭuwā and ʿAmr encamped at al-Abṭaḥ. ʿAmr sent to his brother: Fulfill the oath of Yazīd. He had sworn not to accept his pledge of allegiance unless he brought him in a collar. It is also said: until I place a silver collar on your neck that is not visible, and let not the people strike one another, for you are in a sacred land. ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Zubayr sent ʿAbd Allāh b. Ṣafwān against Unays with those with him from the people of Makkah who had gathered to him. Ibn Ṣafwān defeated him at Dhū Ṭuwā and finished off their wounded, killing Unays b. ʿAmr. Muṣʿab b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān marched against ʿAmr b. al-Zubayr, and ʿAmr's companions scattered from him. He entered the house of Ibn ʿAlqamah, and his brother ʿUbaydah came to him and granted him protection. Then he went to ʿAbd Allāh and said to him: I have granted protection to ʿAmr. He said: Do you grant protection against the rights of the people! This is not right, and I did not command you to grant protection to this wicked man who violates the sanctities of God. Then he subjected ʿAmr to retaliation from everyone he had flogged, except al-Mundhir and his son, for they refused to take retaliation. He died under the whips.
