Translation
✧ In the year fifty-eight, the people of Kufa expelled ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Umm al-Ḥakam. That was because he behaved badly among them, so they expelled him. He joined Muʿāwiyah, his maternal uncle, who said to him: “I shall appoint you to something better than it—Egypt.” So he appointed him, and he set out toward it. The news reached Muʿāwiyah b. Ḥudayj al-Sakūnī, and he went out and met him at a distance of two stages from Egypt. He said to him: “Return to your maternal uncle, for by my life, you will not conduct yourself among us as you conducted yourself among our brothers of the people of Kufa.” So he returned to Muʿāwiyah. Then Muʿāwiyah b. Ḥudayj came as a delegate and entered upon him while Umm al-Ḥakam was with him. She said: “Who is this, O Commander of the Faithful?” He said: “This is Muʿāwiyah b. Ḥudayj.” She said: “No welcome to him: ‘To hear of al-Muʿaydī is better than to see him.’” He said: “Gently, O Umm al-Ḥakam. By God, you married but did not honor, and you gave birth but did not produce noble offspring. You wanted your dissolute son to govern us and conduct himself among us as he conducted himself among our brothers of the people of Kufa. God would not let him see that. Had he done that, we would have struck him a blow that would make him bow his head.” Muʿāwiyah said to her: “Enough.”
