Translation

✧ The dismissal of al-Ḍaḥḥāk from al-Kūfah and the appointment of Ibn Umm al-Ḥakam. In the year fifty-eight, Muʿāwiyah appointed ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUthmān b. Rabīʿah al-Thaqafī as governor of al-Kūfah. He is Ibn Umm al-Ḥakam, the sister of Muʿāwiyah b. Abī Sufyān, and he dismissed al-Ḍaḥḥāk b. Qays from it. During his governorship in this year, the group of Khārijites whom al-Mughīrah b. Shuʿbah had imprisoned—those who had pledged allegiance to al-Mustawrid and whom he had captured and consigned to prison—came out. When al-Mughīrah died, they came out of prison. Ḥayyān b. Ẓabyān gathered his companions, praised and extolled Allah, then said: Now then, Allah, Mighty and Majestic, has prescribed fighting for us. Among us are those who have fulfilled their vow and among us are those who await, and those are the righteous who succeed by their deeds. So whoever of you desires Allah and His reward, let him follow the path of his companions. Muʿādh b. Juwayn [al-Ṭāʾī] said: O people of Islam, by Allah, if we knew that if we abandoned fighting the oppressors and denouncing tyranny we would have an excuse before Allah, then abandoning it would be easier and lighter for us than undertaking it. But we know and are certain that we have no excuse. Then he said: Stretch out your hand, we will pledge allegiance to you. So he pledged allegiance to him, and the people pledged allegiance to him. They struck the hand of Ḥayyān and pledged allegiance to him, and that was during the governorship of ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAbd Allāh. Then the people gathered in the house of Muʿādh b. Juwayn, and Ḥayyān said to them: Servants of Allah, give me your counsel: where do you command me to go out? Muʿādh said to him: I think that you should march us to Ḥulwān, for it is a district between the plain and the mountain, and between the garrison city and the frontier. Whoever from the people of the garrison city, the frontier, the mountains, or the cultivated land holds our view will join us. But Ḥayyān said to him: Your enemy will attack you before the people gather to you, and they will not leave you until the people gather to you. But I think that I should go out with you on the side of al-Kūfah, then fight them until we meet our Lord. For by Allah, I know that you, being fewer than a hundred men, cannot rout your enemy, nor can your damage to them be severe. But when Allah knows that you have exerted yourselves in fighting His enemy and your enemy, you will have the excuse for it, and you will depart free of sin. They said: Our view is your view. Then ʿUdays b. ʿUrqūb said to them: Go out on one side of this garrison city of theirs and fight. They said: We will not oppose you. So they stayed until the last year of Ibn Umm al-Ḥakam's term, on the first day of Rabīʿ al-Ākhir, when they gathered to Ḥayyān. He said: O people, by Allah besides whom there is no god, I have never rejoiced in this world after I became Muslim as much as I rejoice in this going out of mine against the oppressors. I think we should go out until we camp on the side of Dār Jarīr. When the confederates come out against you, you engage them in battle. ʿUdays b. ʿUrqūb said: If you fight them in the heart of the garrison city, the men will fight us, and the women, children, and slave women will climb up and stone us. A man among them said: Take us down on the far side of the bridge. Muʿādh said: Rather, march us and let us camp at Bāniqiyā. How quickly your enemy will come to you! When that happens, we will face the people and put the houses behind our backs, and fight them from one direction. So they went out, and an army was sent against them, and they were all killed.
